Sealey students show love and understanding with art
October 02, 2019
"We're learning about peace and we're doing art," shared Sealey Elementary School first grader Alanah Holmes. As she selected colorful pieces of sidewalk chalk, she added "the music we started with was to calm our bodies and let out peace. Now we're able to make art."

Alanah's art teacher, Heather Mott and the school's other special area teachers collaborated on an International Day of Peace celebration. Established in 1981, the United Nations declared Sept. 21 as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. At Sealey, all 500 kindergarten through fifth grade students participated.

Mott spent time with each grade level, discussing the role of the United Nations and some of the ways they address global issues including poverty, health, education and social justice. "This year the emphasis of Peace Day is global warming and climate change. We talked about what the kids can do at home and in their community to help and that it's important for everyone around the world to do their part." Students explored how they could use art to initiate peace. Mott said "we talked about symbols of peace and I explained that when you're drawing on the sidewalk, you're a public artist. The sidewalk is your canvas and you're here to send your message out to the world of what peace means to you." Eager to communicate their thoughts visually, Alanah and her fellow classmates left their mark. 2020 Embracing Our Differences International Art Exhibit Celebrating Diversity (Deadline: Oct. 8) 
Embracing Our Differences invites you to participate in creating a world where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated. Become a part of this exciting change through your visual art submission to the annual Embracing Our Differences international juried competition. The statements accompanying each artwork are also vital and provide insight into our common humanity-as well as the differences that make us all unique. The winning artworks combine a deep understanding of both medium and message. Awards are given for "Best-in-Show Adult," "Best-in-Show Student," and "People's Choice" categories, with the last chosen by visitors to the exhibit. Adult winners each receive $1,000; students receive $1,000 with $500 to be directed to the student and $500 to their school's art program, if they worked under the direction of an educator.  Click here for more.  
 



Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation Philanthropic Arts Program (Deadline: Oct. 31)
In its inaugural year, the program seeks to promote the teaching power of the arts. The program's primary goals are to enhance or transform outdated school curricula; motivate and engage children, students, and alternative learners; deepen professional development for teachers, professors, and/or childcare workers; create linkages between school and home; encourage evidence-based art-based instruction; and help close the achievement gap. C-SPAN's StudentCam (Accepting submissions: Nov. 1 - Jan. 20, 2020)
This annual national video documentary competition encourages students to think critically about issues that affect our communities and our nation.  Students in grades 6-12 are asked to  create a short (5-6 minute) video documentary  on a topic related to the competition theme, "What's Your Vision in 2020? Explore the issue you most want presidential candidates to address during the campaign."  With cash prizes totaling  $100,000  each year, C-SPAN awards prizes to 150 student documentaries, and over 50 teacher advisers . Digital Humanities Advancement Grants (Accepting submissions:  Nov. 15 - Jan. 15, 2020)
This grant supports digital projects at different stages throughout their lifecycles, from early start-up phases through implementation and sustainability. Experimentation, reuse, and extensibility are hallmarks of this program, leading to innovative work that can scale to enhance scholarly research, teaching, and public programming in the humanities. Advancing Arts Education (AAE) program (Accepting applications Oct. 1 - Jan. 17, 2020)
The Advancing Arts Education (AAE) program recognizes schools with underserved/emerging arts programs who desire to develop or enhance their programs. One school will be selected from each of the three regions of Florida:  North, Central, and South. As an AAE School, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with an expert consultant(s) in the field of arts and arts integration techniques in developing a plan designed to develop or enhance an arts program in your school. The Florida Alliance for Arts Education provides funding to AAE schools through the Arts for a Complete Education grant. Grant funds will be allocated to support the one-year partnership with the consultant, contingent upon receipt of legislative funding each year. The grant supports awards of $5000 per AAE designation. Click  here to learn more. 
 

Florida Arts Model Schools (Accepting applications Oct. 1 - Jan. 17, 2020)
The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) supports a complete and comprehensive education that includes dance, music, theatre, and visual arts for all Florida students. To help achieve this goal, the Florida Department of Education, in partnership with the Florida Alliance for Arts Education (FAAE), seeks to identify model arts education programs in schools throughout Florida. The Florida Arts Model Schools (FAMS) program recognizes schools that offer exemplary programs in any of the four arts disciplines. Schools can apply for FAMS designation in one or more arts disciplines. Click  here to learn more. 
 

Music Ministry Student Scholarships
Christ Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), Tallahassee offers three (3) student musician/singer scholarships in 2019-20 for Soprano, Tenor, and Bass Section Leaders.  Lead section, solo, and blend with Chancel choir; for scholarship increase, ring bells with bell choir.  Click here for more info.

  Teaching the Holocaust - Empowering Students (Oct. 21 from 8:00am - 3:30pm)
This free professional development session will give educators the tools to teach and initiate important discussions about the complex lessons of the Holocaust. In exploring classroom- tested strategies that can be implemented in your classroom, you will leave  with increased confidence and effective materials to tackle the tough questions your students have about this subject. Add your school plays, concerts, performances, exhibits, festivals, and camps directly to our new Tallahassee Arts Guide. It only takes a few minutes to register and send us information about your arts related school events. They will be listed on the Tallahassee Arts Guide and we'll help you promote them for free!

Story Time in the ArtZone! (Oct. 5 at 11:00am)
The Gadsden Art Center invites you to join them  for reading and art-making in the ArtZone. Recommended for ages 7 and under. The ArtZone is a drop-in art studio for visitors of all ages to come in and get creative! Each month features exciting art projects like printmaking, painting, drawing, collage, and more. The ArtZone also has a children's art library and exhibition space for children/student exhibitions. The ArtZone is part of the Community Connections Renovation & Expansion Project. Fostering the Arts presents "Power to the Poster" (Oct. 12 from 1:00-2:30pm)
Presented by the FAMU Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery, Fostering the Arts presents "Power to the Poster" an activity for kids ages 11-13. With this art activity, participants will learn about the impact of posters, and iconic protest posters of the 1960s and 1970s at the "Walls Turned Sideways are Bridges: Narratives of Necessity" exhibition and afterward, participants will create their own poster.  Art supplies will be provided. VSA Artist-in-Residence
We hire artists and therapists of all art forms to work with children and teens who have disabilities in the school and DJJ system. We are currently looking for artists in your county and would love to talk with any of your staff/artist who might be interested. It is only a one hour a week commitment for 8 weeks and we have two terms a year, fall and spring.  Click here   for details. 
 

Theater Tech Fall Apprenticeship
Palaver Tree Theater Company, Crawfordville, Florida's premier experimental theater and the region's only black box, is seeking volunteer apprentices for set construction, tech, and show running for our Fall lineup of productions. Call for Arts Mentors at Raa Middle School 
Local visual artists, musicians, dancers, and theater professionals are sought to provide mentoring to middle school arts students in Raa's Magnet Program. These students know they want a life filled with arts experiences and you can show them how. If the arts have been an important part of your life and you want to pass that on, this is the perfect opportunity for you. The commitment is very low, just one hour per week, and Leon County Schools takes care of all the rest at no cost to you. Support these students by helping them develop communication and social skills, positive relationships with adults, as well as a life-long love of the arts. The Museum of Florida History is seeking applicants for a part-time OPS Museum Education Program Representative. It will be presented during the January FMEA Professional Development Conference 2020 in Tampa. Please consider sending him a note of congratulations and thanks for all his support of arts education. Did You Know?
Gwendolyn Elizabeth Brooks  was a well-known and influential poet, author, and educator. She was the first African American awardee of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry (1950).
