 Sealey students show love and understanding with art
"We're learning about peace and we're doing art," shared Sealey Elementary School first grader Alanah Holmes. As she selected colorful pieces of sidewalk chalk, she added "the music we started with was to calm our bodies and let out peace. Now we're able to make art."
Alanah's art teacher, Heather Mott and the school's other special area teachers collaborated on an International Day of Peace celebration. Established in 1981, the United Nations declared Sept. 21 as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples. At Sealey, all 500 kindergarten through fifth grade students participated.
Mott spent time with each grade level, discussing the role of the United Nations and some of the ways they address global issues including poverty, health, education and social justice. "This year the emphasis of Peace Day is global warming and climate change. We talked about what the kids can do at home and in their community to help and that it's important for everyone around the world to do their part." Students explored how they could use art to initiate peace. Mott said "we talked about symbols of peace and I explained that when you're drawing on the sidewalk, you're a public artist. The sidewalk is your canvas and you're here to send your message out to the world of what peace means to you." 2020 Embracing Our Differences International Art Exhibit Celebrating Diversity (Deadline: Oct. 8)
Embracing Our Differences invites you to participate in creating a world where differences are embraced and individuality is celebrated. Become a part of this exciting change through your visual art submission to the annual Embracing Our Differences international juried competition. The statements accompanying each artwork are also vital and provide insight into our common humanity-as well as the differences that make us all unique. The winning artworks combine a deep understanding of both medium and message. Awards are given for "Best-in-Show Adult," "Best-in-Show Student," and "People's Choice" categories, with the last chosen by visitors to the exhibit. Adult winners each receive $1,000; students receive $1,000 with $500 to be directed to the student and $500 to their school's art program, if they worked under the direction of an educator.

Cornelia T. Bailey Foundation Philanthropic Arts Program (Deadline: Oct. 31)
In its inaugural year, the program seeks to promote the teaching power of the arts. The program's primary goals are to enhance or transform outdated school curricula; motivate and engage children, students, and alternative learners; deepen professional development for teachers, professors, and/or childcare workers; create linkages between school and home; encourage evidence-based art-based instruction; and help close the achievement gap.  C-SPAN's StudentCam (Accepting submissions: Nov. 1 - Jan. 20, 2020)
This annual national video documentary competition encourages students to think critically about issues that affect our communities and our nation.
Students in grades 6-12 are asked to
create a short (5-6 minute) video documentary
on a topic related to the competition theme, "What's Your Vision in 2020? Explore the issue you most want presidential candidates to address during the campaign."
With cash prizes totaling
$100,000
each year, C-SPAN awards prizes to 150 student documentaries, and over 50 teacher advisers

 Digital Humanities Advancement Grants (Accepting submissions:
Nov. 15 - Jan. 15, 2020)
This grant supports digital projects at different stages throughout their lifecycles, from early start-up phases through implementation and sustainability. Experimentation, reuse, and extensibility are hallmarks of this program, leading to innovative work that can scale to enhance scholarly research, teaching, and public programming in the humanities. The Advancing Arts Education (AAE) program recognizes schools with underserved/emerging arts programs who desire to develop or enhance their programs. One school will be selected from each of the three regions of Florida: North, Central, and South. As an AAE School, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with an expert consultant(s) in the field of arts and arts integration techniques in developing a plan designed to develop or enhance an arts program in your school. The Florida Alliance for Arts Education provides funding to AAE schools through the Arts for a Complete Education grant. Grant funds will be allocated to support the one-year partnership with the consultant, contingent upon receipt of legislative funding each year. The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) supports a complete and comprehensive education that includes dance, music, theatre, and visual arts for all Florida students. To help achieve this goal, the Florida Department of Education, in partnership with the Florida Alliance for Arts Education (FAAE), seeks to identify model arts education programs in schools throughout Florida. The Florida Arts Model Schools (FAMS) program recognizes schools that offer exemplary programs in any of the four arts disciplines. The Gadsden Art Center invites you to join them

Presented by the FAMU Foster-Tanner Fine Arts Gallery, Fostering the Arts presents "Power to the Poster" an activity for kids ages 11-13. Gwendolyn Elizabeth Brooks
was a well-known and influential poet, author, and educator. She was the first African American awardee of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry (1950). She was also the first Black woman to be a poetry consultant to the Library of Congress.
Her first published piece was entitled "Eventide" which was published in the
magazine American Childhood
when she was 13 years old.
