Keeping your Sidewalks and Other Walkways Clean in the Winter

As a homeowner, keeping your sidewalks and walkways clear is very important in the winter months. Here are some tips to follow to keep you and your family safe and informed of local ordinances.

  • Ice melting products should not be applied to concrete that has not cured for at least one year, doing so could cause scaling (flaking) of the concrete surface. Only shoveling snow and ice from newly poured concrete is recommended the first year.

  • Ice melt that is safe for concrete walkways should be used for snow and ice removal and can be purchased at hardware stores.

  • Homeowners are responsible for keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice as it poses a threat to anyone who may walk around the outside areas of your home and a liability for you as a homeowner. Check with your local municipality on laws pertaining to snow and ice removal.

  • Keeping track of when a winter storm may start can help you prepare for when you should sprinkle ice melt on your walkways

  • Don't forget to wear the right winter clothing and protection so you can safely tackle the snow and ice

  • Breaks are important when shoveling snow as it can be strenuous and moving steady and slowly is best for ensuring safety
