Keeping your Sidewalks and Other Walkways Clean in the Winter

As a homeowner, keeping your sidewalks and walkways clear is very important in the winter months. Here are some tips to follow to keep you and your family safe and informed of local ordinances.

Ice melting products should not be applied to concrete that has not cured for at least one year, doing so could cause scaling (flaking) of the concrete surface. Only shoveling snow and ice from newly poured concrete is recommended the first year.

Ice melt that is safe for concrete walkways should be used for snow and ice removal and can be purchased at hardware stores.

Homeowners are responsible for keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice as it poses a threat to anyone who may walk around the outside areas of your home and a liability for you as a homeowner. Check with your local municipality on laws pertaining to snow and ice removal.

Keeping track of when a winter storm may start can help you prepare for when you should sprinkle ice melt on your walkways

Don't forget to wear the right winter clothing and protection so you can safely tackle the snow and ice

Breaks are important when shoveling snow as it can be strenuous and moving steady and slowly is best for ensuring safety

Homeowner Tips

Prepare Your Home for Winter

Winter home maintenance is very important of in keeping your home running efficiently. Starting the process early will make maintenance easier as the temperatures start to decrease. Here are some great tips.

Check your heating system. Hire a professional to check your furnace system to make sure it is running efficiently

Reverse your ceiling fans if it has a reverse switch. This may allow you to turn down your thermostat by a degree or two for greater energy savings.

Clean your gutters. Hiring a professional for this task and monitoring debris build up periodically will keep your home safe from water intrusion.

Protect Your Outdoor Water Faucet

During the fall and winter months, it is important to properly maintain your outside water sources. Following these tips will keep your home free from damages.

Be sure to disconnect your garden hose(s) from the faucet to protect it and store in a safe, dry area

Close the shut off value indoors to protect water flow from backing up

Drain all the water from your outdoor faucet before the first frost of the season

Insulate your outside faucet with an insulated cover

Holiday Light Safety

Holiday time means decorating the interior and exterior of your home. A common part of decorating is using holiday lights. To keep you and your home safe be sure to review these safety tips.

Only use Christmas tree holiday lights that are rated for indoor use and tested for safety.

Check each set of lights for worn or broken cords, broken or cracked sockets, and loose bulb connections. Replace damaged lights.

Turn off all Christmas lights and decorations when going to bed or leaving your home.

If you have a metallic Christmas tree, never put electric lights on it to avoid the risk of electric shock.
