Happy Birthday!

The COCLT is celebrating its 6th year providing opportunities to remove barriers, reuse land, and rebuild communities. We have continued to build partnerships and expand our development areas.

As of April 30th, we have sold 100 homes. Currently, we are on track to welcome 85 new homeowners into our program within the next year. Continue to look for new development projects in the News Bites section of the newsletters or go to our website.

Our buying process may have changed since you purchased your home, but everything still starts with attending an orientation class. If you have family or friends interested in homeownership, please consider referring them to us by using this LINK.

Homeowner Tips

Laundry Chronicles

One of the most time consuming household chores you and your family have to complete is laundry. Here are great tips to ensure your laundry is fresh and ready to be put away nicely.

Best Wash Cycle

  • The best cycle to use when washing your clothes is the express or lower timed wash. This not only reduces wash time, but also the energy used to run the washer itself.

  • This express wash cycle washes more efficiently and effectively to clean your clothing, linens, and other items.

Measuring your Laundry Detergent

  • Often when washing clothes, too much laundry detergent is used per load. A good measure of detergent needs is about two tablespoons.

  • Using less laundry detergent actually gets your clothes more clean. Larger amounts of laundry detergent actually causes more dirt and grim to stick to your laundry items.

Other Tips

  • Dryer sheets can be used sparingly in laundry loads, but not every time.

  • Some effective cleaning products for stains and smells are vinegar and baking soda.

Mulch & Rocks

When deciding on ways to make your landscaping pop more with your current greenery, mulch and rocks are creative ways to finish off your look.

Mulch comes in several colors including black, brown, and red. Each color has its own way of complimenting your current yard features. There is also organic and inorganic mulch available in your local hardware store.

Overall, mulch is a great way to control weeds, improve soil biology, inhibit certain plant diseases, and insulate the soil during summer months.

Rocks are similarly a great decorative feature that can enhance your landscape. This feature adds texture and contrast to your lawn area and is generally low maintenance. The rocks also come in a variety of colors and sizes.

In comparison, rocks are more durable and last longer than just using mulch. You can create rock gardens, water features, and much more.

Using either mulch or rocks definitely adds a greater depth to the appearance of your lawn and is a great family or friends activity to complete. Having an attractive and creative lawn space can help boost your pride in homeownership and also serves as a conversation starter.

Recycling 101

As a homeowner, recycling may become a bigger part of your life. There are many benefits to recycling. Here are some steps to take when preparing your items to be recycled.

  • Consider purchasing several small to medium sized storage bins to store your recyclables each week.

  • Lightly rinse out your containers and keep the lids and caps on to make for a successful recycle.

  • Plastic bags and other loose plastic materials are not able to be recycled and should be included in your regular trash bags.

  • Try to organize your recycling by type such as cardboard, paper, and plastics. This makes it easier to ensure you have added in items that are not recyclable.

  • Junk mail or other unwanted mail can be recycled and helps reduce waste by decreasing the amount of paper product going to landfills.

  • A few products that are not generally recyclable include foam food containers, garage waste, yard waste, and cups with wax and plastic coatings.

  • Be sure to check your local municipality's website to keep track of your curbside recycling days.
