Planning begins on dental clinic for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
Dean Guthmiller and Drs. Jillian Wallen, Amir Farhangpour and Jennifer Kallio are part of a team that is planning oral health care services for the new Munroe-Meyer Institute on the UNMC Omaha campus.
The College of Dentistry is developing a dental clinic that will be uniquely designed for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities via the
Caring for Champions Program, a collaboration with Special Olympics that will provide sustained vision, dental and weight management services
. The college will be partnering with the Munroe-Meyer Institute to provide this specialized patient care starting in 2021.
|
|
Dr. Jillian Wallen said, "We are honored to be part of the new medical/dental home model that the Munroe-Meyer Institute has developed and to be able to better address the oral health care issues that continue to face individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across the lifespan."
"It has been ten years now since the pediatric dental clinic relocated from Munroe-Meyer to Children's Hospital and Medical Center. This state-of-the-art building will allow us to better serve these individuals and their families and provide an excellent opportunity for our students and residents to see firsthand how well interprofessional health care works."

Dental and nursing students work together to get patients out of pain in Grand Island
Students and faculty provided care to 29 patients and removed 104 teeth (an average of 3.6 teeth per patient) at a SHARING Clinic held in Grand Island on October 19. The estimated value of the services provided was $22,582, or $777 per patient.
The UNMC-Kearney nursing program also participated. Six senior nursing students and one faculty member took the patients' vitals, went through health histories highlighting important items for dentistry, and assisted the dental students. This event is a great example of an Interprofessional Education learning experience where students from different health professions work together to learn from each other to enable collaboration and improve health outcomes.
|
|
Eric Ahrens
, a fourth-year dental student, volunteered at the SHARING clinic.
"The Grand Island clinic was a great opportunity to help people in need and people in pain who can’t normally afford care. There were a lot of patients from Grand Island and the surrounding communities that couldn’t stop thanking us students for the services we provided. It was also a great opportunity for us students to learn and gain valuable experience. I really enjoyed being a part of the experience!"

Students learn how to approach difficult patient situations through cultural awareness workshops
This semester, second-year dental students learned how to approach difficult patient situations in cultural awareness workshops taught by Dr. Yun Saksena, associate professor and associate dean for education. Through role-playing, the students navigated different scenarios, such as when a patient prefers a male doctor or when a patient's spouse won't let the patient speak, and practiced different methods for handling the situations.
The students said that the key takeaways from the role-playing exercises were there are many different ways to look at situations and it's important to ask patients thoughtful questions to get a better understanding of the patient's point of view. The students appreciated this learning experience because they recognized they were building the interpersonal skills they need to handle a variety of difficult patient situations. The students also appreciated being able to learn from each other through sharing their own diverse points of view.
