Dialogue with the Dean
Dean Janet Guthmiller interviews David H. Shaw, Ph.D., who is celebrating 50 years of service to the College of Dentistry. Dr. Shaw reflects on his time at the college, including his most memorable moments and what changes he has seen throughout the years.
|
|
Dr. Shaw's Bio:
Dr. David Shaw is a native of Fremont, Neb., and graduate of University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he received his bachelor's and master's degrees. He earned his Ph.D. in pharmacology at the University of the Pacific.
He accepted a full-time faculty position at the UNMC College of Dentistry in 1969 as one of the first to be hired in the newly established Department of Oral Biology. He rose in the ranks to professor and in 1987 was appointed as chairperson of the department, a position he has held continuously for the past 37 years.
Dr. Shaw has directed all the pharmacology courses offered to dental hygiene, dental and graduate students for the majority of the 50 years of his tenure. Over the years, he has participated in numerous educational initiatives locally and nationally, served as chair of many University and College of Dentistry committees and currently serves as co-chair of the Medical Sciences Interdepartmental Area graduate program and as a basic science site visitor for the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation. For the past three years, Dr. Shaw has served as the college's Interim Associate Dean for Research. In 2018, the UNMC COD Alumni Association presented Dr. Shaw with an Honorary Life Membership Award.

all are expected to be completed by early October 2019.
"We are thrilled to be embarking on this exciting adventure which will have an immediate impact on our students and how they learn. The combination of the equipment and the technology will provide a truly unique educational experience! Thank you to everyone for your input and patience as we transform these spaces."

|
State-of-the-art learning environment
The following important renovations will create a unique learning environment where our students will get the educational experiences they need to become leaders in dentistry or dental hygiene.
|
|
Preclinical simulation laboratory
The current preclinical lab spaces will be combined into a single space with 16 modular pods with four individual stations. The stations will provide bench space and simulators with dental handpieces, air, water, vacuum and dental lights to reflect a clinical environment.
This space will also include virtual dental trainers, which use haptic technology and high-end flight simulation technology to achieve a high level of realism and support manual dexterity, operative, crown, endodontic and pediatric procedures.
Estimated completion date: early October
|
|
Digital dentistry laboratory
A new 15-station digital dentistry laboratory with CAD/CAM technology will be adjacent to the new preclinical lab space and will contain an equipment studio with milling machines, 3D printers and other technology.
Estimated completion date: early October
The anatomy lab
will be upgraded with new digital display monitors and new camera technology.
Estimated completion date: mid-July
|
|
“I am ecstatic about the new renovations. I know that the cutting edge technology is the best in the nation and will provide our students with the ability to reach new levels in their professional careers. Being able to simulate with virtual reality is invaluable for our learning process before getting into the clinical setting. It is truly an incredible opportunity that UNMC is providing to not only current students, but future students as well.”
Lotte Sjulin, second-year dental student
|
|
A comfortable, student-centered environment
A new micro mart
will replace the vending machines and will provide higher quality, fresh food choices like sandwiches, fruit, snacks and beverages. It will have pay-as-you-go technology.
Estimated completion date: early August
A new outdoor seating
area will be located in the southwest corner of the building and will include large umbrella tables and movable individual tables and chairs.
Estimated completion date: TBD
Classrooms 1213, 1221 and 1223
will be upgraded with new mobile furnishings, digital display monitors and other technology upgrades, as well as new carpet.
Estimated completion date: late August
New student lockers
will replace the tall student lockers. These newer models will lock and are made of new composite (quieter) materials.
New tile flooring
will be installed on the lower level of the building.
|
|
“The renovations are very exciting and fulfilling a great need for up-to-date facilities. Technology is a large focus in the new classrooms and preclinical labs, helping to prepare us for the future of dentistry. I’m most excited for the realistic practice the updated preclinical lab will offer with new mannequins that include water, suction and cheeks. I can’t wait to try out the virtual dental trainers, where you can feel the difference between enamel, dentin, pulp and caries before you ever see a patient.”
Carly Johnson, second-year dental student

Advanced Standing Program now taking applicants
The College of Dentistry has had an Advanced Standing Program (ASP) for many years where internationally educated dentists obtained their D.D.S. Recently, we restructured the program to create a standardized experience for the students and updated the curriculum. The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) has approved the changes to our existing program and we have received the necessary procedural approvals from UNMC.
Thus, we are excited to announce that we are taking applicants into this standardized curriculum. Dentists who are US citizens or US permanent residents and have earned the equivalent of a D.D.S. from an international dental program are eligible to apply. The 29-month program, starting January 2020, will enroll up to six advanced standing students.

Random act of kindness: Brock Lewis
Brock Lewis is being recognized for going above and beyond to help one of his patients.
A staff member reported, "I overheard Brock ask his patient, who was in a wheelchair, if he could help him to his car. The patient declined and said it wasn’t necessary, but Brock proceeded to offer and follow through. The patient told Brock he waits for someone to come by to help him wherever he is. Brock went above and beyond."
Get to know Brock:
Where did you grow up?
Seward, Nebraska
Why did you decide to pursue the dental field?
I've always wanted to work in the healthcare field and own my own business. Dentistry allows me to do both.
What’s one of your fondest memories of your time at the College of Dentistry so far?
Connecting and building trust with patients has been one of my favorite parts of clinic. Dental appointments are not always fun for patients so having a good personal connection can keep patients coming back for treatment. One of my favorite patients said I'm her extra grandchild, and it really made my day.
What would you say to potential students who are considering the College of Dentistry?
Our
small class size is great because your classmates and faculty become a small family over your four years. It's great to be able to work and learn with a familiar group of people.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?
My classmates and I play snooker over our lunch hour at Madsen's Bowling and Billiards when we have time throughout the week. It's not a very popular pool game but we enjoy the added challenge.
What’s your favorite thing to do on a day off?
I go out to breakfast or lunch with my wife followed by doing something outside like going to the pool, golfing or going on a run with my dog.
What’s your favorite movie?
Saving Private Ryan or Gladiator.
What’s your favorite local restaurant?
Ming's House.

Social media spotlight: Vy Vu
Vy was recently featured and, by the number of people who left comments or likes, it is clear Vy has a great impact on her patients, fellow students and everyone else in her life.
Get to know Vy:
Where did you grow up?
I was born in Saigon, Vietnam. I came to Lincoln when I was 10 years old.
Why did you decide to pursue the dental field?
I've always known that I wanted to have a career in health care. After I volunteered at the dental clinic at the People's City Mission and shadowed different offices in town, I was absolutely sure that dentistry was what I wanted to pursue. Dentistry allows me to have interaction with my patients while also allowing me to work on my artistic and technical ability. I love working with my hands.
What’s one of your fondest memories of your time at the College of Dentistry so far?
My first patient was my cousin. I was so inexperienced, stressed and nervous. I am fond of that memory because it constantly reminds me how far I've come since that first clinic session. The College of Dentistry faculty and staff do a fantastic job of guiding and preparing students for their clinical experience.
What would you say to potential students who are considering the College of Dentistry?
My journey to where I am today was not easy, and there have been many failures along the way. However, do not let fear of failure prevent you from achieving your dreams. Failure is an inevitable part of life. Life is not easy and achieving something grand in life is even more difficult. Everything in life that is worthwhile requires hard work, dedication and time. Have faith in yourself and try your best. You owe that to yourself.
What is the most unique or interesting thing about you that most people probably don’t know?
I love true crime documentaries!
What’s your favorite thing to do on a day off?
I like to have a fun and relaxing day with my loved ones.
What’s your favorite movie?
Finding Nemo/Dory.
What’s your favorite local restaurant?
DISH Restaurant is absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend it.

"My student dentist is well-trained in customer service and very thorough. I was initially referred here by one of my family members. I am a firm believer in education, which is one of the many reasons I come to the College of Dentistry," she said.
|
|
Alycea has been getting her dental check-ups and cleanings at the college for 8 years.
"I like coming to the College of Dentistry because they make my teeth look amazing and that makes me feel good," she said.

UNMC COD Alumni Association President Al Robertson
Al Robertson, D.D.S., the current president of the UNMC COD Alumni Association, is busy organizing the annual College of Dentistry Alumni Reunion, which will be held on October 4-5, 2019 at the Embassy Suites in Lincoln.
Al and the rest of the COD Alumni Association members have planned many exciting activities, including banquet speaker Tom Osborne, engaging continuing education courses, the presentation of the alumni awards, and a College of Dentistry update from Dean Janet Guthmiller.
Get to know Al, who was a member of the UNMC College of Dentistry class of 1981:
Why did you pursue dentistry?
One of my earliest memories of wanting to pursue a career in dentistry was seeing my grandfather struggle with dentures. He couldn’t chew foods like the rest of the family and I always felt bad for him.
What have you been up to since graduation?
After graduation I soon realized how much I still had to learn. For the next several years, I studied extensively through several venues, including Dr. Peter Dawson’s courses and The Pankey Institute. I eventually became a Pankey Mentor.
How did your time at the College of Dentistry set you up for success?
My experience at the college taught me to develop disciplined study habits as well as efficient time management - important elements for a successful private practice. I also want to thank my instructors for instilling in me a desire for excellence.
What’s one of your fondest memories of your time at the College of Dentistry?
One of my fondest memories was working for Dr. Stan Harn. During the summers, Dr. Harn would hire several of us to work on projects. We collectively and very proudly became “The Harn Boys.”
What would you say to potential students who are considering the College of Dentistry?
Through the years I have met dentists from around the country who were educated at various dental schools and I would rate the quality of my dental education every bit as good, if not better, than anyone I have ever met. I am incredibly proud of my dental degree. It has afforded me a wonderful lifestyle. There isn’t a day that goes by that I’m not very thankful for the opportunities that the UNMC College of Dentistry gave me.

Oliveira-Haas receives faculty diversity grant
Luana Oliveira-Haas, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., recently received grant funding through UNMC's Faculty Diversity Fund to aid in her work to solidify an international collaboration between UNMC, the College of Dentistry and the Federal University of Uberlandia (UFU) in Brazil to create a non carious cervical lesions (NCCL) research group at the College of Dentistry in collaboration with the already established research group at UFU-Brazil.
The purpose of the Faculty Diversity Fund is to create a learning community of faculty, students and staff members with different cultural backgrounds.
"I’m very honored to be the first Faculty Diversity Fund recipient at the College of Dentistry. Developing a research collaboration with UFU-Brazil, my
alma mater
, has been one of my biggest dreams since I started teaching in the United States in 2007. I’m very excited about producing high quality clinical research with UNMC and Brazilian faculty and students while embracing the richness of diversity," said Dr. Oliveira-Haas.
The NCCL research group will be composed of eleven members: four faculty members and four predoctoral students from UNMC, and one faculty member and two Ph.D. students from UFU-Brazil. With the grant support, one faculty member and two Ph.D. students will be recruited each year from UFU-Brazil to work on summer research. The Ph.D. students will spend one month at the College of Dentistry. They will work on collecting and analyzing research data, publication of articles and laboratory research. Additionally, they will provide seminars, lectures and mentorship to predoctoral students.
This collaboration will expose UNMC and Brazilian students to new ideas and developments in NCCL research, as well as engage other faculty members and increase their participation in research grant proposals. As the research group grows during the second year, there will be opportunities for two UNMC faculty members and two students to visit the NCCL research group at UFU-Brazil.

Mary Kramer retires
Mary Kramer has worked at the College of Dentistry for 38 years. She started in September of 1980.
What have you enjoyed most about working at the college?
The challenges that technology has brought to us and trying to utilize it to make people’s jobs better. The basic duties have not changed, just the tools we use. I have been part of first writing programs to track clinical activity; then moving patient data from that software into GSD’s Quick Recovery software (1998); then moving from that into TwoTen Health’s Salud software (2005) and then expanding it's use to implement a full electronic dental chart (2012).
But first and foremost, it’s been the people I’ve worked with along the way. The college has had some incredible staff, faculty and students that I’ve had the pleasure of working with through the years. No projects like these are accomplished without the assistance and support of a multitude of others.
Do you have any parting words for your colleagues?
Good luck. Hope to still see many of you in the years to come.
What are you looking forward to most in retirement?
Less stress.
|
|
Mary Lu Stuebbe said, "It has been a great pleasure to work with Mary. She has played a key role in the implementation, support and ongoing use of our electronic health record. Her dental knowledge and extensive system knowledge has helped the college thrive. I want to thank her for the effort and focus she has put forth and for her years of dedicated service. Her knowledge will truly be missed. Best wishes to Mary as she embarks on her next adventure!"
