POLYWOOD Announces 384 Jobs in Person County
|
|
POLYWOOD, a manufacturer of outdoor furniture made from recycled plastics, will create 384 jobs over five years in Person County. The company will invest $35.3 million to open a manufacturing and distribution center in Roxboro. POLYWOOD manufactures low-maintenance, recyclable lumber from plastics and is a premier wood alternative in outdoor furniture. The North Carolina Department of Commerce and the Economic Development Partnership of N.C. (EDPNC) led the state’s support for the company’s expansion.
POLYWOOD’s project in Person County will be facilitated, in part, by a Job Development Investment Grant (JDIG) approved by the state’s Economic Investment Committee. Partnering with N.C. Commerce and the EDPNC on this project were the North Carolina General Assembly, the North Carolina Community College System and Person County.

The P5.0 Subcommittee met on October 4, 2018 to select projects for the draft point assignment list. A total of 14 projects were selected to receive a portion of the allotted 1,300 points for the Kerr-Tar Region. The KTRPO TCC.TAC met on October 25, 2018 to finalize the project list. An open house where public comments will be received on the final project list will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Kerr- Tar Regional Council of Governments offices.

Visit NC Farms Mobile App

The KTOCG is encouraging farmers in the region to participate in the Visit NC Farms Mobile App. This mobile app will showcase our local farms/agritourism industries and attract visitors to our region. The Planning Department would like to thank everyone who attended the Recognizing Human Trafficking Training for local government employees facilitated by Margaret Henderson from the UNC School of Government. Participants learned the basics about human trafficking as well as indicators for building inspectors, code enforcement officers, social workers, and school administrators working with the public and in public spaces. A great dialogue was developed, and there was vast amount of interest from the various attendees. The Planning Department looks forward to hosting a follow-up workshop geared towards hospitals, health departments, and health professionals.

KTRPO staff attended the Statewide Stakeholder Group Kickoff Meeting in Raleigh on October 29, 2018. NC Moves 2050 Plan is a strategic transportation plan connecting communities across North Carolina, focused on creating a more responsive, diverse, and inclusive transportation system for keeping people and freight moving safely and efficiently. Sharon Thomas, Mobility Manager attended the 39
th
NCDOT Public Transportation Division (PTD) Training Conference Transit’s Transformation October 8-10, 2018 in Chapel Hill. The State’s Strategic Plan and the Statewide Locally Coordinated Plan where items discussed among the state’s Mobility Managers. Three strategies of the Strategic Plan were discussed for implementation:
- Building Thriving, Healthy Communities - Partner for a Successful Future
- Improving Access to Jobs and Supporting Economic Development - Support Local Transit Systems
- Connecting Communities to Opportunities - Build A Connected Statewide Network
A roundtable
discussion was held discussing topics involving: funding, mobility (on-demand/micro transit, access to services, etc...), smart communities, customer service, ridership-counting techniques, safety and zero-emission vehicles.
The Americans Disability Act (ADA) was another item discussed at the conference. The discussion of ADA transportation requirements included: working with transportation network companies (TNCs), paratransit on-time performance requirements, contractor monitoring, paratransit no-show suspension policies and paratransit eligibility determination requirements.

PASTA (Parenting A Second Time Around)
|

On Wednesday, November 7, 2018, the Kerr-Tar Area Agency on Aging will implement a program known as PASTA (Parenting A Second Time Around) in Roxboro. PASTA is a parenting program designed for relative caregivers who are not the biological parents of the children in their care. PASTA provides grandparents and other kinship caregivers with information, skills, and resources designed to enhance their ability to provide effective care for the young relatives they are parenting. PASTA consists of eight sessions. This program will be offered at the Person County Senior Center, November 7th -December 19th on Wednesdays from 12:30 P.M. – 2:30 P.M. Older Adult Mental Health First Aid

December 12, 2018
, the Kerr-Tar Area Agency on Aging will partner with Cardinal Innovations Healthcare in holding an Older Adult Mental Health First Aid Training from 8:30 A.M. – 5:00 P.M. at Vance-Granville Community College, located on 200 Community College Road in Henderson. This is an 8 hour public education program which introduces participants to the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adults and older adults, builds understanding of the importance of early intervention, and teaches individuals how to help an adult/older adult in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge. We encourage individuals working within healthcare, aging, mental health, human services or community outreach to attend. Deadline to register is December 10, 2018. The KTCOG’s Workforce Development Board Triangle Literacy Council’s, Constructing Pathways to Prosperity Program received a 2018 Aliceann Wohlbruck Innovation Award from the National Association of Development Organizations during the organization’s Annual Training Conference in Charlotte. The Program offers three integrated components to area young adults: high school equivalency preparation, occupational training, and construction work-based learning.
