An Important Message from NCDOT
|
|
Because of on-going financial issues at NCDOT, internal staff were informed on Monday, May 18, 2020 there will be furloughs. They started the week of May 18 with the Executive team, who will take 30 hours unpaid leave through June 30. Beginning the week of May 25, senior staff will start 25-hour furloughs through June 30. Finally, the remaining staff will be furloughed for 20 hours starting June 1 through June 26.
NCDOT has already reduced its 2020 construction total from $2.7 billion to less than $600 million. These financial issues are also affecting operations and maintenance. There are also changes to the mowing schedule. NCDOT will only mow three times, starting in June. As of today, NCDOT’s funding issues have not affected the funding of Kerr-Tar RPO.
Note: KTRPO staff will continuously keep members of the RPO informed with updates from the Department and North Carolina General Assembly

Northeast Area Study Update
|
|
The NEAS Update is an update to the original 2014 Northeast Area Study that looked at land use and transportation needs in the study area covering portions of Wake and Franklin Counties. The study area also includes portions of the following municipalities: Bunn, Franklinton, Knightdale, Raleigh, Rolesville, Wake Forest, Wendell, Youngsville, and Zebulon. All municipalities, along with the N.C. Dept. of Transportation, are partners in the study. This update will produce recommendations across all transportation modes, as well as update policies and priorities that have evolved since 2014.
If you would like more information about the NEAS Update, please visit the project website at
http://www.neasupdate.com
,
where there is a short introductory video. The video, provides good information on the study’s background, objectives, key deliverables, and public engagement events. The study’s website also includes a Community Survey and Interactive Map
,
where citizens may identify issues, concerns, and points of interest within the designated study area to be further explored as the update progresses.
|
|
Don’t forget to share your thoughts by taking an
interactive map survey
or a
10-question survey
on how trails can serve transportation purposes, and provide connections between where people live, work and play. Participants are encouraged to take both surveys beginning now through September 30

NCWorks Career Center Virtual Hiring Event
By: Joe Jung
On May 20
th
the Kerr-Tar NCWorks Career Center hosted our first Virtual Hiring Event. A total of 9 employers participated. Two featured employers, Amcor Rigid Plastics & Piper Technologies, joined the event and were able to speak directly to the 29 job seekers in attendance.
The hiring event was conducted using an innovative combination of Zoom and the NC Works system, which allowed attendees register and view the presentation. The online presentation allowed job seekers to view a profile about each company that included a company overview, open positions and information about the application process. Business Services Representatives were also available after the event to follow up with candidates and assist in scheduling interviews.
One job seeker that attended has worked in security and as a Corrections Officer for most of his career. Looking for a new career pathway, he was intrigued by the opportunities available at South Granville Water and Sewer Authority. The NCWorks Career Center team assisted him with his resume, the application and a referral to the employer. Applications were submitted for Meter Reader Technician as well as Plant Pump Station Maintenance Mechanic Helper, and SGWASA has contacted him for an interview.
Another hiring event attendee was laid off from his job as a Solutions Engineer for an IT company in early March, during the first wave of COVID-19 related lay-offs. He attended the virtual hiring event but did not see any opportunities that he thought would suit him. The NCWorks Career Center Business Services team contacted him after the event to follow up, and after reviewing his resume noticed that he had previous experience in aviation through his service in the National Guard. After the discussion about the customers experience and transferable skills, the Business Services team optimistically referred him to Ontic Manufacturing and Engineering, an aviation parts production company in Butner who has several open positions currently listed in NCWorks.
All customers who registered for the virtual hiring event have been contacted and referred to virtual workshops through NCWorks and training opportunities at the area community colleges to assist them in preparing for future virtual hiring events or other opportunities available in our region.

Jahari Williams became a NextGen participant in January 2020. A native of Warren County, she had recently left a part-time position at her local grocery store. She came into the NCWorks Career Center and we completed an initial assessment which indicated strong Social, Investigative and Enterprising interests. After a discussion about her future career pathway and the steps needed to fulfill her career goals, we decided that work-based learning would be the perfect tool to enhance the interests and skills identified during her assessment. Jahari’s first step on her career pathway would be a Work Experience. The NextGen Program was able to match Jahari with the County of Warren for an administrative assistant position. Throughout the duration of her WEX assignment, Jahari was able to successfully complete all the objectives outlined in her training plan.
“It was a great experience. I learned a lot of new things about working in an office setting. Some of the things I learned were editing, social media and how to draft correspondences professionally,” said Jahari.
Jahari recently applied for a full-time accounting technician position with the County of Warren.
“I most definitely will refer others to the NextGen Program because you learn a lot about furthering your career. I was able to network and connect with other professionals,” says Jahari when asked about her overall experience with the program.
