First-Generation College Celebration Week

Special thanks to all #FirstGen students who took a moment to share their inspiring stories with us.

Term 4 nursing students hit home run during MCI training

Student nurses gained essential emergency skills during a simulation training session organized by the Walter R. Garrison College of Nursing at Pennsylvania Institute of Technology on December 10th.

The mock casualty event provided emergency training for more than 100 students studying nursing. The Mass Casualty Incident simulation was a fire in the cannabis lab that resulted in more than 60 injuries.

Students gained critical thinking, teamwork and lifesaving clinical skills including triage and hemorrhage control by simulating a large-scale disaster in a realistic environment.

"Students used S.M.A.R.T. triage at the 'scene' to evaluate 40 patient actors. They completed vital signs, neurological and physical assessments, treated burns and wounds, and provided therapeutic communication," said Christine Bagley, simulation operations coordinator and certified CPR instructor at P.I.T.

"Students also performed CPR on adults and infants using feedback manikins, inserted IVs, assessed lung sounds, and administered nebulizer treatments to patients at the 'hospital.' After visiting the 'hospital,' students returned to the 'scene' to re-assess their patients," she said.

"At the end of the activity, we facilitated a debrief in which our students discussed the scenario and reflected on their learning," Bagley noted.

Congratulations to our students, faculty and staff for making this event a huge success.

WATCH ALUMNI LEGACY SPOTLIGHT

Have you seen our new Alumni Legacy Spotlight? WATCH NOW >>

As we close out 2025, I want to share my excitement for the chapter that is about to unfold on our campus. On December 5th many of you may know that we celebrated a successful groundbreaking for our new facilities, a moment that marked the official start of the most significant campus transformation in P.I.T. history. In the weeks ahead construction will move from planning into full action. You will begin to see real changes take shape as crews prepare our site for new learning spaces, new gathering spaces, and new opportunities for students to grow and connect.

While the upcoming work will bring some temporary inconvenience, it represents a long-term investment in you and in the future of our P.I.T. community. We are building a campus that reflects the ambition, resilience, and talent of our students. These new facilities will support hands-on learning, career focused programs, student engagement, and a stronger sense of belonging and pride for everyone who walks through our doors.

This quarter also brought an important leadership transition in Academic Affairs. At the end of November, we celebrated the retirement of Dr. Heather Pfleger, whose service has contributed greatly to the academic strength of P.I.T. We thank Dr. Pfleger for her dedication and wish her well as she begins this next chapter.

At the same time, I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Richard Lombardo as our new Vice President of Academic Affairs. Dr. Lombardo brings a clear vision for our next chapter and a deep commitment to student success. He will lead the launch of new programs, strengthen academic quality, and work closely with faculty and staff to make sure our students are prepared for the needs of tomorrow’s workforce. I know you will enjoy getting to know him in the months ahead.

Finally, I want to recognize the milestone we all achieved together. This fall our campus reached the largest enrollment in our history, nearly 1,000 active students! Your success and your belief in our mission have helped P.I.T. grow into a strong, vibrant college that continues to change lives.

Thank you for your patience as construction begins and for your ongoing commitment to your education and career attainment. I am grateful for each of you and excited for all that awaits us in 2026 and beyond!

Happy Holidays!

NATURE'S CORNER

With the last days of autumn upon us, the campus is misty with the approach of winter. Despite the fallen leaves, the birds continue to sing while enjoying a plethora of seeds stored within our many bird feeders throughout the campus grounds. There truly is beauty everywhere! As Albert Einstein said: "Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better."
