FALL 2019
Congratulations to the Fall 2019 Lambda Inductees!
Welcome to COMMunity, the biannual newsletter reporting on new and exciting developments in our department.
From the Chair's Chair
As we close out the 2010s and head into a new decade, I am thrilled that the Communication Department has accomplished so much in its first full decade of existence at Manhattan College. Starting in 2008 with three concentrations, we have expanded and updated our concentrations to six, including the new Integrated Marketing Communications and Sports Media Production concentrations. The successes of our graduates were evidenced during our alumni reception this semester in the historic Flatiron Building, with alumni working at CBS, NBC, CNN, Vice, Sound Lounge, Buzzfeed, Lion Television, UTA, The Dr. Oz Show, and Engel Entertainment, among many other great companies. Our founding chair, Dr. Thom Gencarelli, has built a strong department, and the dedication of our other department faculty Dr. Arshia Anwer, Dr. Nicholas Gilewicz, Dr. Rebecca Kern, Dr. Michael Plugh, and Dr. Michael Quinn, our Coordinator of Media Technology Robert Coleman, our Administrative Assistant Kaitlin Scheie, and our new Producer/Director Joe Ruggiero show our growth and strength. It is my privilege to continue our successes into a new decade.

This semester, we inducted 18 new students into Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Association’s honor society. Two Communication students accompanied Dr. Anwer to San Diego as representatives of Manhattan College’s chapter delegation to the Public Relations Student Society of America 2019 International Conference in San Diego. Lotus Magazine relaunched as an inclusive publication, WRCM radio began its first full academic year of programming, and our Media Production students held their first film festival screening of short films. We are launching several innovative courses, including a winter intersession study abroad experience in India, a summer study abroad in Rome, a winter intersession Game Design and Development course, and spring special topics courses in Virtual Reality Production and Professional Communication.

In the spring, we will be surveying students and alumni to see what new courses and programs we can offer to better serve students, and there are many more exciting announcements to come soon! Of course, our students are the core of our success, and I thank you for continuing to be engaged and passionate about Communication. With this momentum, we will achieve even greater successes in the 2020s.

Best wishes for our future,

Dr. Michael Grabowski

New Concentration: Integrated Marketing Communication
will Begin in Fall 2020
by Scarlett Sperduto

Next Fall, the Manhattan College communication department will be introducing a new concentration: Integrated Marketing Communications is a hybrid of advertising and public relations practices. Due to the current rise in digital and interactive media communication, advertising, marketing, and public relations companies are increasingly adopting integrated marketing communications as the leading approach to plan and execute marketing communication programs. This concentration is a great choice for students who have an interest in both advertising and public relations, as it allows them to not have to choose just one area.
