What is your role at COMPASS?
Ricky: My current role is Admissions Coordinator. In this position, I receive referrals from a variety of school districts and determine whether each student is an appropriate fit for the COMPASS program and whether we are able to meet their needs.
My typical day includes reviewing student profiles, communicating with school districts, and coordinating with parents to schedule interviews and tours. I work closely with families and district representatives throughout the admissions process to ensure a smooth and supportive experience.
What originally brought you to COMPASS, and what keeps you motivated?
Ricky: My connection to COMPASS goes back to the 1990s, when both my dad and my uncle worked here. After I graduated from college, my dad reached out to Margy Nicholson, and that phone call helped me get my foot in the door at COMPASS.
What continues to motivate me to work at COMPASS is the strong collaboration among my coworkers and the family-like atmosphere we have. Everyone works together with the shared goal of supporting our students and helping them succeed, which makes this a rewarding place to work.
What’s one moment or accomplishment you’re especially proud of?
Ricky: There have been so many meaningful moments at COMPASS that it's hard to choose just one. But seeing the students I've worked with graduate is always incredibly rewarding. Those are the moments that money can't buy.
Watching our students graduate reminds me that I—and our entire COMPASS team—helped plant a seed when each student first came here. Graduation is the day we get to see those seeds grow and bear fruit right before our eyes.
How do you describe the COMPASS mission to friends or family?
Ricky: I would describe our mission as bringing hope to those who feel hopeless. We strive to provide students and their families with support, encouragement, and opportunities for success by helping each student reach their full potential
What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
Ricky: I actually had curly hair before I went bald.

Ricky: “Do not mix excitement with commitment.”
