Help us raise $10,000 for COMPASS School's 2026 Summer Enrichment Programming!

The COMPASS School provides summer enrichment programming to a portion of students enrolled during the regular school year term to provide ongoing support. Our structured schedule includes academic tutoring, outdoor education, weekly BBQ's with the culinary program, gardening and more!

With 100% of COMPASS students having an Individualized Education Program (IEP) in place, there is a worry that their emotional, behavioral, and academic gains will be lost when they leave for summer vacation due to the nature of their disabilities of varying degrees.

The Summer School program hosts approximately fifty K-12 students over the course of a 6-week period (Monday-Thursday). During each week, the students receive academic enrichment, clinical support and the opportunity to go on field trips to explore educational and social opportunities throughout Massachusetts.

Only $2,000 left to reach our goal!

Thank you to the Philanthropy Massachusetts Summer Fund for awarding a $7,500 grant in support of the COMPASS School Summer Program!

COMPASS Advocates with Children's League during Advocacy Day at State House and Provider's Council Caring Force Committee Rally

COMPASS Executive Director Laura Lajewski, PhD and Director of Community Engagement & Development, Veronica Parsloe, attended the Children's League of Massachusetts Advocacy Day on May 14th at the State House in support of youth and families, including a meeting with State Representative Christopher Worrell to share updates on our programs and community impact.

As a proud sponsor of two Caring Force Rallies this year, COMPASS program supervisors attended the 2nd Annual Merrimack Valley Caring Force Rally to advocate for human services workers. Please join us for the 1st Annual Metro Boston Caring Force Rally on Friday, September 25, 2026 at Work Inc. in Dorchester.

Lawrence Program Supervisors Spencer Vrouhas, Beatrice "Beau" Zama-Morales and Scott Stella attend the 2nd Annual Merrimack Valley Caring Force Rally on June 5th at Northern Essex Community College.

Thank you to our Community Partners!

Our $25,000 Winter Appeal goal was met thanks to support from P&G Gillette awarding a $2,500 grant for the John J. Lydon Help Fund, which allows COMPASS to provide basic needs resources for our clients! Our Spring Appeal launched in support of the School's summer program, and we received our first ever grant from the Philanthropy Massachusetts Summer Fund who awarded $7,500 in support of field trips.

Thank you to the Independent Schools Compensation Corporation (ISCC) for awarding a Health & Safety grant to support repairing our SawStop used in our school's Building, Maintenance & Repair (BMR) Program!

Ricky Montesino

Admissions Coordinator

COMPASS School

"What continues to motivate me to work at COMPASS is the strong collaboration among my coworkers and the family-like atmosphere we have.

Everyone works together with the shared goal of supporting our students and helping them succeed, which makes this a rewarding place to work."

We are grateful for the history and expertise Ricky brings to COMPASS every day! Read more about Ricky below:

What is your role at COMPASS?

Ricky: My current role is Admissions Coordinator. In this position, I receive referrals from a variety of school districts and determine whether each student is an appropriate fit for the COMPASS program and whether we are able to meet their needs.

My typical day includes reviewing student profiles, communicating with school districts, and coordinating with parents to schedule interviews and tours. I work closely with families and district representatives throughout the admissions process to ensure a smooth and supportive experience.

What originally brought you to COMPASS, and what keeps you motivated?

Ricky: My connection to COMPASS goes back to the 1990s, when both my dad and my uncle worked here. After I graduated from college, my dad reached out to Margy Nicholson, and that phone call helped me get my foot in the door at COMPASS.

What continues to motivate me to work at COMPASS is the strong collaboration among my coworkers and the family-like atmosphere we have. Everyone works together with the shared goal of supporting our students and helping them succeed, which makes this a rewarding place to work.

What’s one moment or accomplishment you’re especially proud of?

Ricky: There have been so many meaningful moments at COMPASS that it's hard to choose just one. But seeing the students I've worked with graduate is always incredibly rewarding. Those are the moments that money can't buy.

Watching our students graduate reminds me that I—and our entire COMPASS team—helped plant a seed when each student first came here. Graduation is the day we get to see those seeds grow and bear fruit right before our eyes.

How do you describe the COMPASS mission to friends or family?

Ricky: I would describe our mission as bringing hope to those who feel hopeless. We strive to provide students and their families with support, encouragement, and opportunities for success by helping each student reach their full potential

What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?

Ricky: I actually had curly hair before I went bald.

Do you have a favorite quote, motto, or piece of advice that inspires you?

Ricky:  “Do not mix excitement with commitment.”
