With the Summer already almost half over, I hope you have found some time to relax and enjoy the season. In the spirit of summer vacation, we have two opportunities coming up to get away from the daily grind and socialize with your fellow architects. First, the WIA Committee is holding their Summer Social at The Winery at Bull Run on Aug. 6 from 11am to 3pm. Next, we are planning our third all-chapter roaming happy hour on Aug. 15 at Blackwall Hitch in Alexandria. Registration is not required but is encouraged so we have an idea of how many people for which to plan.
We are excited to host a virtual Membership Town Hall with AIA Virginia's Leadership: President Robert Easter, FAIA, and Interim EVP Helene Combs Dreiling, FAIA, on Aug. 25. AIA VA wants to hear from you, the members. Provide suggestions for enhancing member service and support and learn more about current programs and resources. Please submit any question(s) or ideas you may have to be addressed live via Zoom.
Finally, to usher the Summer out with good thoughts, we are touting the Chapter’s various Awards programs. First up are nominations for the Chapter Honor Awards. Is there someone whose work you feel should be acknowledged by the Chapter? Someone who has helped the membership, or advanced a particular committee? If so, read more about various award requirements and consider submitting on your nominee’s behalf. To wrap up this note, I encourage you to support the Chapter and your colleagues by joining us at the 2022 Design Awards Gala. The premier event of the Chapter, our Design Awards will be awarded at our first in-person gala in years at Capital One Hall on Aug. 25. Excellence in design will be on display and we hope to see you there!

Design Award Gala
The Design Awards Gala returns to an in-person event this year. To be held on Aug. 25, 2022, at the Capital One Hall in Tysons, Virginia, the gala officially begins at 5:30pm. Preview the event's location in the Featured Project section below.
Join us to honor this year’s AIA Northern Virginia’s Design Award Recipients. Hear commentary from our Philadelphia jurors on each winning project and network with colleagues and design leaders that you may not have seen in far too long. Add in a venue designed by a Northern Virginia architecture firm, educational tour, good food and good company, surely a great night is to be had. We hope to see you there.

Capital One Hall

The HGA-designed Capital One Hall in Tysons, Virginia is the heart of Capital One Center, a new 24.5-acre, mixed-use urban redevelopment of Capital One’s corporate headquarters.
The flexible new corporate and performing arts center stands at a hub of multi-modal transportation options and brings together key features of urban life, including street-level retail, state-of-the-art performance and event spaces (The Atrium: 1,300-person flexible space, The Vault: 225-seat black box theater, The Main Theater: 1,600-seat performance hall), and a fully landscaped public rooftop park (The Perch), featuring a biergarten, open-air amphitheater, bocce courts, and sculpture garden.
7,000 slabs of white Italian Carrara marble form The Hall’s exterior façade, punctuated with vertical windows embedded in the folds of the envelope to catch and reflect light into public spaces while minimizing glare and solar heat gain.

Inside, the serrated design of The Atrium’s 57-foot ceiling echoes the building façade and provides deep areas suited to tree planting for the rooftop garden.
The deep granite flooring contrasts with warm walnut paneling and metal accents, framing the windows and shaping The Hall’s major event spaces.
Sandwiched between the Wegmans loading dock and The Perch, The Main Theater design incorporates a “box-in-box” structural approach and meticulous engineering, driven by the need to mitigate the noise and vibration from the surrounding human and vehicular activity. Rubber padding insulates the performance spaces, while the perforated metal of the theater’s interior walls conceal advanced acoustic enhancement systems for optimal sound quality.
Given the building’s vertical space limitations, the design allows the audience to be much closer to the stage than is typical, offering patrons a more intimate experience. The project has achieved LEED 2009 NC Gold Certification.

Free Series on Embodied Carbon
Every Tuesday through Oct. 4 from Noon-1:30pm EDT
Join AIA Virginia’s COTE Committee for this multi-part free series worth 1.5 AIA LU|HSW per session. The series is designed to help designers understand embodied carbon and immediately apply that knowledge to projects to reduce emissions and get to zero carbon. Unlike operational carbon, which can be reduced during a building’s lifetime, embodied carbon is “locked in” as soon as a building is completed. Over the series, you’ll learn how to measure, manage, and implement practical solutions from expert practitioners including architects and sustainable building product manufacturers. Buildings contribute about 40% of the world’s carbon emissions, and embodied carbon is a big slice of the pie. Learn more and register.

AIA 360 Mentoring: Towards a New Practice
Beginning this Fall
AIA Northern Virginia, AIA|DC, and AIA Potomac Valley are teaming up to offer a tri-chapter mentoring program. This year’s theme, “Towards a New Practice” will focus on what it takes to be an architect in a post-pandemic world. Content will focus on hiring and retention, balance at home and in the office, mental health, and flexible work environments. AIA 360 Mentoring is a year-long program where participants with a broad range of experiences develop non-hierarchical relationships with other architectural professionals in a safe and nurturing environment. Groups of 5-6 individuals will be paired to meet in between full-group general sessions with programing provided by the Chapters. Look out for more information and registration later this summer.

Integrating Sustainable Systems with Custom Residential Design: A Construction Tour
