A message from Pastor Charlie:
Brushing Our Teeth and Springfield, OH
How do your teeth look? And more importantly, how do your words sound?
Last Sunday in the sermon, I invited us to pray for our words as we brush our teeth, especially in this tense election season. Every day, we need to reconnect ourselves to God’s love; saying a prayer when we brush our teeth is one good opportunity.
We launched our Kindness Campaign last Sunday, with the hope of helping us in this tumultuous election season. In my sermon I spoke about the importance of kindness (and being careful with our words) and about being courageous to speak the truth in love (Eph. 4:15) especially in the face of tyranny. you can read it or watch it at your convenience. (All recent sermons are on our website.)

This Sunday, our focus is on COMPASSION. One way of understanding compassion is the root words:
COM = with
PASSION = suffer
| |
So, being compassionate means suffering with those who are suffering. God calls us to share our burdens (Gal 6:2) and to weep with those who weep (Rom 12:15). In Jesus Christ God has promised to be with us, so try to be with each other, especially in the challenging times.
Thus I was happy to see friend-of-Covenant Michael Johnson (CEO of the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, in blue shirt) in Springfield, Ohio this week. He was there to support the Haitian community, which has been under duress over the past week, after lies were spread about them.
He ate at Haitian restaurants and, with local connections, helped several Haitian families with furniture and more. Ohio resident and celebrity Dave Chappelle was there too (rear left in black glasses). Michael offered the sermon at Covenant back in May 2015.
| |
And I was glad to learn about Covenant Presbyterian Church of Springfield which has strong connections with the Haitian community, including four families that have joined, with baptisms happening at the church. Click on the photo to learn more. With a name like Covenant, it has to be a great church, right?
As you may know from the news, the situation in Haiti is grim, with widespread violence and poverty. Hundreds of thousands have fled from armed gangs and devastating hunger. Read more here

So I’m grateful that Covenant has a longstanding connection with Haiti, through the Medical Benevolence Foundation. Our mission dollars have been supporting health care in Haiti for many years. Click on the photo above to learn more about MBF in Haiti.
Together as a congregation, we seek ways to be compassionate, supporting partners like the health care workers in Haiti. Individually we try to be compassionate, as we support those who are struggling. Being KIND, COMPASSIONATE, and COURAGEOUS are central to our calling as followers of Jesus.
On the journey together,
Charlie
