A message from Pastor Charlie:
Presbyterian Parties and Seminary Students!
We have some Presbyterian parties in the next month, and I hope you’ll come celebrate at one or more of them!
This Sunday is our 70th anniversary as a congregation. Thanks be to God!
| |
We have a Celebration Concert at 2:00 which will last about an hour, followed by a reception. In our morning worship (at 9:00 and 11:00!) we will also celebrate the anniversary, including some video greetings from Covenant friends.
We are giving thanks to God for all the blessings of these 70 years, with special thanks to members and staff who built and solidified our church. And we’re praying for courage and wisdom as we go into the future.
Along with our Covenant party, we also have four ordinations/installations for new pastors coming in our region, as part of John Knox Presbytery. I’m the moderator of JKP this year, so I get to be part of each celebration.

|
John Knox Presbytery consists of 55 congregations and about 7,000 members, in southern Wisconsin, northeast Iowa, and southeast Minnesota.
Congratulations to Natalie Handley, husband of Covenant Communications Coordinator Derek. She will also be ordained as a Presbyterian pastor this Fall here in JKP, to serve First Presbyterian Church of Marquette, Michigan. Derek is continuing to work mostly remotely at Covenant this month and through October.
One of many things I love about being Presbyterian is that we are a connectional church, which means congregations support and encourage each other, and we pool our resources for mission, training, leadership, and more. We are one body with many parts.

Within JKP we are blessed to have Dubuque Theological Seminary, one of the 13 graduate schools affiliated with the Presbyterian Church.
Folks at Dubuque began offering seminary classes in Madison several years ago, in an innovative initiative called Madison Learning Community, a theologically and racially diverse group, studying together. Covenant mission dollars have supported scholarships for many students. Thank you!
Several Covenant people have taken classes: Marilyn Krichko, Barbara McCall, Brenda Moten, Carrie Sanders, and Melissa Schmidt. And one of the classes was hosted at Covenant. Most of the Covenant students have preached sermons at Covenant and at other area churches. Several are signed up for “Leading Vital Churches” this fall, where they will read Canoeing the Mountains—the book I mentioned in the sermon last week.
Speaking of seminary, it’s exciting that our Church Administrator Bailey Green has enrolled in Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota in the Masters of Divinity program. She will be taking courses online as she continues her position here at Covenant.
I’m grateful to be surrounded by lots of good people who want to keep LEARNING, including the vast majority of our Covenant community who are NOT taking seminary classes!

We come together week after week to keep LEARNING about God’s amazing love for us, with the hope that this love transforms us, so we can LIVE as new people. That’s something to celebrate!
On the journey together,
Charlie
