Our refuge and our strength
Greetings!

I remain deeply troubled by the riot at the Capitol last week, especially with the visible support of those claiming to be Christian.
Banners proclaimed “Jesus Saves.” Large crosses were visible along with posters and apparel proclaiming Christian messages and Bible verses. While Christian music played, many people in the crowd were storming the Capitol, assaulting police officers, and planning attacks on elected officials.

Imagine how the response would be different if 100,000 darker-skinned people gathered to storm the Capitol chanting “Allahu Akbar” and “Hang Mike Pence.”

In addition to moderate and liberal Christians, several prominent conservative Christians have denounced the riot and the events leading up to it, calling the church to repent.

I am deeply concerned about ongoing threats of violence and deep-seeded polarization (political, economic, and racial) in our country.

We have a long road in front of us. We need to channel our anger, frustration, and despair in hopeful and helpful ways. We need to get on our figurative and maybe literal knees asking God for courage and strength.

God promises to give us strength, but we're also called to humility. Jesus calls us all to continual repentance, which means to change our minds and change our actions. We need to encourage each other with the transformative power of the gospel, in our own lives and in the world.
Do not be overcome by evil,
but overcome evil with good.
--Romans 12:21
As we wonder how to move forward, I take inspiration this week from a group of veterans and from two Presbyterians who are trying to overcome evil with good.
A Navy veteran organized 200 other vets who spent two hours picking up trash left in the wake of the riot.

David Smith, 40, spent 13 years in the Navy, including time in Afghanistan as a combat medic and was horrified to learn that other vets participated in the siege on the Capitol. So he took action. Click on photo to read more.
Rev. Margaret Grun Kibben is the new chaplain for the US House of Representatives.

She is the first woman to be chaplain, and she’s Presbyterian. The riot happened on her third day as chaplain. She did her best to pray with and comfort frightened and weary people in the Capitol. Click on photo to read more.
Rep. Andy Kim from New Jersey was dismayed by the desecration of the Capitol, so he got on his knees to help clean it up.

He also is a Presbyterian (and a veteran). Click on the photo to read more.
The article on Chaplain Kibben mentions that she shared part of Psalm 46 with terrified people in the Capitol building: The Lord is our refuge and strength.

May God give us refuge from violence and ignorance, and may God give us strength to overcome evil with good.

On the journey together,
Charlie

PS--On Tuesday at 4:30pm, we are hoping to join with thousands of other people, ringing bells and praying for all the people impacted by Covid. Tragically, almost 400,000 US citizens have died from Covid, including three members of Covenant. Check our Facebook page for a live video or contact the church office, as plans are still being made.
Vaccines are happening!

We are grateful for the COVID vaccine and we're compiling a photo album of Covenant members getting their vaccines to celebrate!

Click the button below to add a photo of you getting vaccinated or a photo of your vaccination card (or email your photo to Lexie Ofe and she will add it for you!).
Thanks to Covenant's Ministry Associate (and UW Hospital Chaplain) Chelsea Cornelius for sharing her vaccination photo!
