CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY INCREASES ON I-64 EXPRESS LANES

HAMPTON SEGMENT

Additional traffic impacts upcoming as roadway construction ramps up on the Hampton Segment of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes Network

HAMPTON — Roadway construction activities continue to ramp up on the Hampton segment of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes Network (HREL), a project designed to provide a safe and more reliable travel option for motorists across the region and help relieve congestion at key locations along Interstate 64 (I-64), from west of Mallory Street (exit 268) to LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A).

The $313.9 million project, awarded to design-build contractor Shirley-Branch Joint Venture, will convert approximately 2.4 miles of the three existing eastbound and westbound general purpose lanes on I-64 into two general purpose lanes and two Express Lanes in each direction. Additionally, the eastbound Hampton River bridges will be replaced; the westbound Hampton River Bridge and bridges over King Street and Settlers Landing Road will be widened and rehabilitated; and the bridges over Rip Rap Road will be rehabilitated. Tolling gantries, overhead signage and noise walls will also be installed as part of this project.

During construction, motorists can expect scheduled lane closures, long-term lane reductions and traffic shifts taking place throughout the corridor.

Currently, overnight single-lane closures are occurring in the corridor from west of Mallory Street (exit 268) to LaSalle Avenue (exit 265A) while crews continue shoulder-strengthening activities.

This work is in preparation of the next stage and upcoming lane reductions and traffic shifts, estimated to begin in early July, when I-64 east and west will be reduced from three lanes to two lanes, and the travel lanes will be shifted away from the median between Rip Rap Road and Settlers Landing Road (exit 267), to allow for construction in the median in preparation for widening the I-64 west Hampton River bridge.

Motorists are encouraged to sign up for project email updates and learn more about the project online at https://64expresslanes.org/under_construction/hampton.asp to stay informed of construction activities and traffic impacts.

All construction work is dependent upon weather conditions. The I-64 Express Lanes Hampton Segment project is estimated to be complete as early as late 2026.
