WEEK WITHOUT DRIVING September 30 - October 6
Walk and Roll, Bellingham is sponsoring a challenge for all of us to consider going for a week without taking the car. Bike, walk, or take a bus instead of the car.
"Sign up here! You're not being asked to log trips or provide proof of any kind. The folks at Walk and Roll would just love to know who is thinking about alternatives. They'll send you a survey at the end so you can tell us what you learned, or the problems you encountered."
For more information, Go HERE.

Walk and Roll Announces new Bike Lockers
The City has installed 14 new bike lockers in downtown! There are eight lockers at the corner of Railroad and Champion and six lockers at the Commercial Street Garage. You can Download the Movatics App to check availability, rent lockers, and store your bike and gear. Users pay just 5 cents an hour to rent a locker, but credits are purchased in $5 increments to minimize extra fees.

Greg Hope (Education and Outreach Coordinator for the City of Bellingham) offers the following recommendations on protecting ourselves, our neighbors and our loved ones
Talking about scary or dangerous things that could happen isn't easy. But making the choice to talk and plan could help your household survive a disaster or emergency.
Here's how to get started:
- set aside a time to talk when everyone is calm and relaxed
- have more than one conversation, it will help folks become comfortable with the topic
- discuss how to reach one another during a crisis, how to create and where to store "go bags" if you need to evacuate, and what to do each month to become "two weeks ready"
Being prepared to respond to, survive and recover from emergency isn't a one-and-done exercise. But we're here to help you through the preparation process. Stay tuned for more tips, all month long! Meanwhile, we hope you can share our message, the video linked below, and a colorful graphic on your neighborhood's social channels.

Have you heard about the WA Cares Fund? The WA Cares Fund is a first in the nation program that was created to help people age in their own home. Seventy percent of us will need long-term care but won’t have a way to pay for it. This fund can be used to help pay for caregiving in your home, home safety modifications, transportation, meal delivery, and other services when you have had a sudden injury or would like to age safely in your home. This fund can help you pay for care you will need instead of needing to drain your life savings or use your 401k to cover long-term care needs.
People who are working are contributing to the fund each paycheck. A worker who earns just over $50,000 per year will contribute $24 per month. You earn access to the benefits by working the required number of years and needing help with a few activities of daily living. There is an option where benefits can be pro-rated if you are near retirement.
Starting in July 2026, people who are eligible for the WA Cares Benefit will be able to apply to access $36,500 that can be used toward Long Term Care, and this benefit amount will increase with inflation each year.
You can visit the WA Cares Fund website to learn more or call NWRC at 360-676-6749.

The September newsletter included a link to a website filled with useful information about plastics.
One of our Cordata neighbors submitted this link to another resource with more news about what is hapeening in the war against plastic deluges in our land, waters, wildlife and in our bodies.
Launched in January 2019, Beyond Plastics is a nationwide project based at Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont, that pairs the wisdom and experience of environmental policy experts with the energy and creativity of grassroots advocates to build a vibrant and effective movement to end plastic pollution.
