Art Education Thrives at CCUSD!
While many districts have cut back on art education, the arts are alive and well at Culver City Unified School District. The District's elementary art teachers, Ms. Alarcon and Ms. Fattorini, started lessons this week and the results are fantastic!
Backpacks for Kids Seeking Volunteers and Donations for Food Drive Event
The CCUSD Backpacks for Kids Program will be holding a food drive at the Pavilions grocery store on Jefferson Boulevard from 10am to 6pm on Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24. The group is looking for both donations and volunteers who are willing to work in two-hour shifts.

More than 33% of CCUSD students receive free or reduced price lunches at their schools every day. For many students, this vital resource includes free breakfast. In some circumstances, healthy, reliable meals on the weekend s are not a guarantee.

Since 2013, the CCUSD Backpacks for Kids program has been serving students at all CCUSD school sites, serving more than 10,000 meals to students throughout the year.

The CCUSD Backpacks for Kids Program provides food to CCUSD students who may not have access to healthy food during the weekend. Parents and staff work together to identify students in need. On Thursdays, parents and student volunteers at one CCUSD location fill the backpacks. The backpacks are delivered every Friday to each school for these students to take home anonymously. The volunteer group, run through the non-profit Culver City Council of PTAs , is hoping to stock the pantry so it can begin sending out backpacks for the 2017-2018 school year.

Those interested in volunteering can sign up for shifts here . For more information about the program, please contact Megan Rawls at meganbackpacks@gmail.com.

The program has been extraordinarily well-received and recently earned a second grant from the Mark Hughes Foundation in the amount of $45,000 as well as a grant from The Albertsons Companies Foundation, The Vons Foundation and The Pavilions Foundation that was used to purchase new backpacks for this school year.

The group plans to start a Culver Food Closet located in the high school Career and College Center to allow high schoolers to more discreetly pick up food that they need.

Celebrate Culver City's Centennial Birthday
The conclusion of Culver City’s year-long observance of its 100 th Anniversary is almost here, and what better way to celebrate than holding a good ole' fashioned Birthday Party in the Park?!

Part of the city's Centennial Closing events will be a Culver City Birthday Party held from 11am to 7pm on Saturday, September 16 th in Veterans Park at the corner of Overland Avenue and Culver Blvd. The event is free and open to the public.

When you enter the Birthday Party through the balloon arch, you can take a selfie in front of the Centennial banner thanking all our sponsors for making the day a success. You will also receive a program and “passport.” Visit the various spots on the map, get your passport stamped and when filled out drop it off for the possibility of winning a prize.

The morning and mid-afternoon will be devoted to family fun activities. There will be kids games provided by CCUSD schools; an arts and crafts area where you can build your own cardboard village, do chalk art, help paint a Centennial mural or a Kindness rock; basketball and paddle tennis and a health and wellness station to learn about nutrition while getting some exercise. There will even be an encampment by the Boy Scouts, food trucks galore, a baking contest, bus tours, live music, dancing and much, much more.

There will also be a program with comments by the Mayor, the President of the Centennial Committee, and performances from the Taiko drummers from Culver City Middle School, the high school marching band, the drum line and cheerleaders and the presentation of the street light pole banners to the student artists.
