SPECIAL EDITION:

AUXILIARY!

President's Letter

I am so delighted to be your new President and to welcome (7!) new Auxiliary members to Hortulus this year. I think this is the perfect opportunity to highlight them and to reintroduce existing Auxiliary, and I’m grateful that Trina has put this edition together for all of us. Our Auxiliary members are the next generation of energy into our club and I’m excited about getting to know each of them even better.

I would be remiss without thanking Diane Jennings for hosting us in her gorgeous home for our Annual Meeting this past June and without thanking our resourceful Hospitality Chairs Heather Sargent and Cary Keigher for our delicious lunch and for being so fluid in the face of weird weather. As you may recall, this was the inaugural year of establishing “The Emmy”, a mentorship award in Emmy Ogden’s name, and we had the pleasure of honoring three local educators for their work and to have Emmy’s own family present.

This year is starting off with a bang with our GCA flower Show CURRENT.

Elizabeth Darling and Annesley MacFarlane have been working tirelessly this past year, with the assistance of so many of you who have graciously served on committees. This show is so important because, as you know, the revenue from the flower show fuels our civic endeavors for years, helping us engage with and contribute to our Greenwich community.

If you haven’t already purchased your Celebration Party and raffle tickets, please do so! Click here to purchase.

Also, it is easy to enter the Horticulture classes, so please bring your cut specimens, succulents, lovely house plants, rose hips and seed heads! Click here to email Trina with any questions!

Click here for the CURRENT schedule.

Thank you all for your camaraderie, your energy, your mentorship and your fun!

Best, Adrienne

MEET OUR AUXILIARY!

Starting with our first year Auxiliary members...

AUXILIARY CLASS of 2023

LELA PHILIP

I moved from Bedford, New York, 22 years ago with my husband Tom and three children, Nick, Sam and Lily. Our two sons are married and they each have a baby girl!  After 15 years as an art teacher, I left teaching and am now focusing on my own art business painting  commissions. I love my garden and like to get my hands dirty! Flowers and beautiful places give me joy and are inspirational in my creative process.

JUDY COLLINS

Judy Collins was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. She attended Duke University where she majored in history and went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania Law School. She spent more than 15 years in New York City practicing law at Davis Polk & Wardwell and Hogan Lovells. She is married to Chris Collins, whom she met in college, and has three children, Charlie (16), Xan (14) and Harry (11). She is actively involved in the parents associations of her children's schools and serves as a board member and secretary of REACH Prep, a local non-profit which provides educational opportunities to underserved high-achieving students. She is looking forward to getting to know all of the Hortulus members and to finding her green thumb!

CAROL HENDERSON

Carol and her husband Jim moved to Greenwich 25 years ago. They have three children: Madeline and Graham, who live and work in NYC, and Pierce who is a junior at Williams college. Carol received her BA from the University of Vermont and her MA from NYU, both in psychology. Since moving to Greenwich to raise her family, she has volunteered through the Junior League, numerous civic organizations, and held a variety of positions at each of her children’s schools. Although her mother and grandmother were both avid gardeners, Carol is a novice who is eager to learn everything there is to know about horticulture and garden/floral design, including what is going on in her own yard! Carol is thrilled to be a part of Hortulus and learn from the best!

CHELSEA SCHAEFFER

I was born in Southern California by the sea. My life was formed spending tons of time outdoors in my mother's beautiful garden. Magical days amongst lemon trees, camellias, roses & jasmine, my love affair with flowers was meant to be. So blessed to have made our way to beautiful Greenwich, where I live with my husband Derek, our daughter Graycen, two giant Bernese Mountain dogs and a very big cat.

REN HARMAN

Ren moved to Greenwich in September 2018 and immediately started cultivating a meadow on .35 acres of her front yard. The meadow has been a labor of love that continues to evolve and attract wildlife. Before Greenwich, Ren lived in Central London for 15 years where she honed her gardening skills with patio plants: Wisteria, Magnolia and Camellia. The temperate climate was an easy launchpad for gardening enthusiasts. Today, Ren enjoys having more land to explore and experiment, as well four seasons. Ren is a wife and mother to two children ages 12 and 15 years. In 2021, she started a community-based volunteer group dedicated to the preservation of Bruce Park called Friends of Bruce Park, LLC. She is also the president of her Homeowners Association, Chimney Cove, located off Bruce Park in Greenwich.

LAUREN DUPONT

Lauren duPont grew up in Greenwich and returned in 2019 after 24 years of living in New York City. Lauren works as a creative consultant for fashion, beauty and lifestyle brands. She has worked with Estee Lauder, Clinique, AERIN, Ralph Lauren, Jack Rogers, Vogue, Vogue.com and Vogue Living. During COVID Lauren found herself with much more time on her hands and enrolled in the Floret Online Workshop and was completely hooked. She and her husband, Richard, were lucky to find a house in Greenwich with established gardens, and as a result Lauren has been trying her hand at growing from seed using the process of winter sowing. She is also addicted to visiting nurseries, shopping for plants, flower arranging and all things gardening. Lauren is on the board of the Greenwich Historical Society and is a committee member of The Scholarship Program of the Northeast Harbor Library where she spends part of her summer with her family.

Lauren is a mother to three children, Ava (23), Lila (20) and Nico (14).

CATHERINE TOMPKINS

Catherine Tompkins has lived in Greenwich for 14 years. She is originally from Northern California and attended Yale University, where she earned a degree in Political Science and Spanish. She began her career in finance, working in Investment Banking and Private Equity. Catherine earned her MBA from Harvard Business School in 2005 and spent several years in Investment Management, focusing on Consumer Products and Energy companies. After moving to Greenwich in 2009 she shifted directions, volunteering for Harvard Business School Community Partners and founding CT Designs, an event and special projects business. She serves as Co-Chair of the Board of the Greenwich Historical Society and has co-chaired both the Greenwich Academy and Brunswick Benefits, as well as the Brunswick Fashion Show. Catherine is an avid traveler and design enthusiast. She is constantly in pursuit of adventure and beauty, and flowers rank high on her list of favorite things. Her interest in Hortulus primarily lies in visiting gardens, hospitality and floral design. Catherine is married to her college sweetheart, Dave Tompkins, and has two children – Charli (15) and Cal (13). She loves animals and has two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Austin and Daisy.

AUXILIARY CLASS of 2022

The ladies below are our experienced Auxiliary members....these bios were in last year's Special Edition: Auxiliary.

CARMIÑA ROTH

Carmiña resides in Old Greenwich with her husband and two children, ages 13 and 17. After graduating from law school, Carmiña spent a decade on Wall Street working in mergers and acquisitions and capital management. Seeking a change after the birth of her first child, Carmiña subsequently founded and operated her own interior design firm specializing in residential projects. Presently, Carmiña is the Chief of Staff of a private family office, responsible for coordinating accounting, tax, legal, and philanthropic affairs. Since moving to Greenwich in 2005, Carmiña has served on the Board of Trustees of the Greenwich YWCA and the Greenwich Botanical Center and is presently serving on the Bruce Museum’s Investment Committee and the Board of Trustees of the Greenwich Center for Hope and Renewal. In her spare time, Carmiña enjoys traveling, cooking, playing tennis, and vegetable gardening.

STAPLEY RUSSELL

Named after her Australian grandfather, Stapley is a longtime resident of Greenwich. She was born in NYC, very coincidently in the same hospital and at the same time as her husband of over 30 years. Raised in Greenwich, the oldest of six children, she attended GA, then Groton School and Georgetown University. She was a writer/editor for many years before giving it up to raise three boys. Having lived in NYC for 12 yrs and London for 3, she then moved to Greenwich, where she has devoted her time to taking care of her family and various community services and is an Editor at the Sentinel. She has a huge passion for playing sports, being in nature, reading and any form of entertainment. Her desire to continually learn new things has brought her to Hortulus, where she only hopes to give to the group as much as she expects to gain! To be fair, she has a lot to gain.

KATE CHUNG

Kate Sheridan Chung along with her husband David and two teenagers, Allie and Elliot, moved to Greenwich from San Francisco in the spring of 2021. In San Francisco, Kate was active in the community via the arts; SFMoma and SF Fine Arts Museums, garden clubs of the wine country and non-profits focused on education and human services for children and their families, e.g., Children of Shelters and Enterprise for Youth. Kate looks forward to supporting her new community in similar ways, starting with the much needed honing her gardening skills!

MEREDITH SHAMES

I accidentally became a gardener when my husband and I purchased our current home and its expansive garden. My love affair with gardening began with flowers but has expanded with time and now includes everything that grows...except for weeds. I live with my wonderful husband, two boys, and two dogs.

Carrie Powers

CARRIE POWERS

California, NYC, Stonington, and final destination: Greenwich!

In my past, I’ve been a pet portrait artist and substitute teacher.

My first grandchild arrived July 22nd and lives just 17 minutes away!

(Carrie was an active member of Stonington Garden Club and we are delighted that she is going to call Hortulus her new home.)

JOYCE ZEE MORGAN

Auxiliary Chair

I never dreamed I would one day become a garden enthusiast! What a fantastic first year with Hortulus, learning and getting acquainted with the Auxiliary sisters. My curiosity of the horticulture world, turned into a massive year of learning at the NYBG, and an even busier year visiting as many gardens as I can.  Life is good with three Whippets, one college boy, and sharing a garden with my garden loving husband.

STEPHANIE DOUGLASS

Most happy out on a hiking trail, I've always had a lifelong passion for the outdoors, wildlife and nature conservation. I fell in love with gardening as a child planting daffodil bulbs alongside my mother in our backyard field in Old Lyme. And later, helping my mother-in-law tend to our vegetable and flower garden in Maine. As a holistic nutrition counselor, I believe deeply in the potent healing powers of food grown at home. I'm delighted to be a new member of Hortulus—a community that shares the same avid respect for the natural world.

SARAH FEY

My husband, Chris, and I moved to

Greenwich in 1999. Our three girls, Daisy, Annie & Mercy, all went through Greenwich Country Day School before going off to boarding school and college. Through my graphic design business, Philofect, I enjoy working with a wide range of clients— schools, non-profits, healthcare organizations, start-ups and financial services institutions. Our family enjoys spending as much time as possible on Long Island Sound—we had a wonderful sailboat for 17 years, and are now moving a little faster on our new powerboat. Our three ill-trained dogs also keep us busy and dominate the family group-chat. I hope my background in design will help as I begin to learn about floral and garden design (from scratch!) I am thrilled to be part of Hortulus!

If you happen to run into an Auxiliary member, please take the time to introduce yourself and get to know them better. The future of Hortulus is in good hands!
