The fall and early winter months bring a special time to the City of Walker. This past month we enjoyed a perfect weather day for Pumpkin Bash. Coming up later this month we have our annual WinterFest at the Walker Ice and Fitness Center as well. These unique events that have become a staple of our Walker community would not be responsible without the help of a few
groups of people. First, the generosity of our numerous sponsors allows us to be able to provide these events at no charge to the public. We are grateful for their support and investment in our
community and would ask that you support them and their organizations when you can. Second, our City staff and volunteers never cease to amaze me. The organization and planning require more than most can imagine, and they are on point every time. Lastly, I would like to thank my colleagues on the City Commission. We have prioritized that sense of place and community, which in turn allows our City staff and volunteers to put on the events. It also gives the sponsors the confidence they need to invest in our community. All these things together make Walker a special place to be.
The Remembrance and Kinney intersection improvements are on track and completion is
expected in the coming weeks. I have been asked why this investment is being made, and
simply put it comes down to safety. While not a high accident count intersection, because of the layout, it has created visibility problems for motorists and pedestrians. With the high activity levels of the neighborhoods with bikers, families walking, etc., we believe that it was time to make some overdue improvements for the safety of all traveling through there.
My last item to share with you is a call to action. While social media has its benefits in
connecting and communicating, it can also and has become a toxic cesspool of controversy,
speculation, and hearsay. Walker is not immune to this, and I need each of you wanting to
reach for the computer keyboards to engage in this, to take a different course. In this newsletter, you will find the contact information for all your elected officials and a number of city staff. Reach out to us and have a live discussion. Even if we might not be able to agree on something, we can at least have a civil and effective discussion and we will leave it reaffirming that Walker is a special place. We can all manage to live, work, and grow together - even if we do not agree on specific things.
Thank you for making the choice to call Walker home.
Mayor Gary Carey, Jr.
