Upon my arrival, I was greeted by a beautiful and inviting campus, as well as several supportive and patient teachers, all of whom have helped me navigate the new environment of California State University Channel Islands. I am sincerely grateful for the assistance and warmth I have received from everyone as I settle into this interim deanship, I see inclusiveness all around the campus as CSUCI strives to serve all students by applying our knowledge about the need to belong and feel connected.
Caring for students is apparent in the counseling students receive from Nitzia Castaneiro and Necole Ramirez beginning when students enter the teacher education program until they receive their credential. In a recent conversation with CSU system education deans, I learned this approach is unique to CSUCI. I found out from Jessica Bradley, our new education career counselor, that the Career Development and Engagement Center offers free new clothing for students’ first job interview. And I wish I had been on campus for last spring’s Social Justice Conference or for Annie White’s storytelling conference. We are pleased to welcome two new faculty, Gladys Aguilar and Alessandra Mittelstet to the School of Education and Sue Siglar who will serve as elementary education coordinator.
The accreditation report for the Commission on Teacher Credentialing was completed during the summer. Kathryn Howard coordinated the preparation of the report, with contributions from Manuel Correia, Mari Rojas-Cortez, Jeanne Grier, Chuck Weis, Liege Ayub, Nitzia Castaneiro, Riley Crain, Paola Dios, Talya Dresher, Evan Hill, Jonna Lewis, Danna Lomax, Lyzette Cornejo, Necole Rameriz, Daniella Sierra, and others who were involved prior to my arrival. The virtual CTC visit is scheduled for October 5 through October 8. Briefing sessions regarding the report and visit will be held for faculty and staff.
I am eager to connect with each of you throughout the upcoming fall semester and collaborate toward supporting our students. Wishing you a successful and productive fall term.
Nancy Hensel
Interim Dean, School of Education
