NABT Letter to the Membership: Teaching About Scientific Misinformation
As scientific misinformation continues to spread at an alarming rate, especially with the increased use of AI using language learning models, NABT is joining a growing community of scientific and education experts calling for science media literacy to become an integral part of the science education curriculum.
On April 20, 2023, the NABT Board of Directors voted unanimously to release a statement to our community raising the alarm about the harmful consequences of misinformation. For students to have true science literacy, they must understand science concepts and practices and the "social practices of science such as peer review and reciprocal critique, and the importance of forming a critical consensus."
In addition, NABT will be working to "identify resources, competencies, and best practices that support the teaching and learning of science media literacy in biology and life science classrooms." One of those experts is Dr. Douglas Allchin, whose assistance and recommendations have been instrumental in helping our human NABT leaders address the challenges posed by algorithms, AI, and emerging media technologies.

15th Annual Biology Education Research Symposium
Life science education researchers from all levels and settings are invited to present their research during the NABT Biology Education Research Symposium.
This is a refereed session featuring presentations accepted through a double-blind review process.
Submissions are due Friday, July 14.

Biology Education Poster Session
The popular NABT Biology Education Poster Session highlights practices, programs, and research in three distinct categories: general strategies for teaching biology, the scholarship of teaching, and mentored student research.
Posters presented by students are eligible for two competitions, and winners will be announced onsite in Baltimore.
Submissions are due Monday, August 15.

Endangered Species Day Celebrates 50 Years of Conservation on
May 19th
Endangered Species Day is only a few days away – Friday, May 19th. As you all may already know, Endangered Species Day is a key opportunity for our community to raise awareness, engage and educate the public, and take action to protect threatened and endangered species.
Large Carnivore Trivia Night is a virtual trivia fundraiser on Wednesday, May 16th, with four rounds of questions featuring three large carnivores – gray wolves, orcas, and grizzly bears. The trivia night will be hosted over Zoom, and questions will range from ecology and biology to history, politics, and pop culture! Prizes will be given out to the winners.
Endangered Species Chalk Art Event: This popular all-ages chalk art contest is entering its 3rd year. People create chalk art depicting threatened and endangered species and post the photos on Instagram to enter the contest.
Along with events, posting on social media using #EndangeredSpeciesDay is also a key way to engage in Endangered Species Day. Generating social media buzz helps increase public awareness of wildlife issues.
Join us on Friday, May 19th for a global day of action and celebration that also marks the 50th Anniversary of the Endangered Species Act (ESA).

Middle-Level Teachers Needed for
Paid Research Study
Are You Eligible? You are eligible for this study if you:
- Speak English
- Currently work as a teacher serving middle school students (5th-8th grade)
- Work at a public school (or public charter school) in the United States
- Have access to a private, Wi-Fi-connected computer, tablet, or phone with video capabilities
- Identify with at least ONE of the following:
- Have ever taught about climate change or related environmental issues.
- Have ever encountered a student who was experiencing negative emotions related to learning about climate change, or due to being directly impacted by an extreme weather event (such as a major flood, hurricane, tornado, fire, heatwave, drought, or other).
- Currently teach in a school district that has been impacted by an extreme weather event in the last five years.
Note: You are not eligible for this study if you are currently receiving or pursuing grant funding from the National Environmental Education Foundation.
Your participation includes completing one 20-minute online survey and participating in one 90-minute online focus group meeting. You will receive $100 for participating in the focus group and $20 for completing the survey.

ACS Offering Chemical Safety Grants to
Teachers Grades 8-12
Are you a middle or high school educator who is passionate about chemical safety in your classroom? The ACS CCS High School Chemical Safety Grant is here to support your efforts! You can receive up to $3,000 to promote chemical safety excellence in secondary education.
Grant purposes include:
- Integrating chemical safety into the curriculum,
- Advocating for safe chemical practices,
- Improving chemical safety infrastructure,
- Use the grant for safety workshops, personal protective equipment, professional development, Chemical Hygiene Officer training, inventory management, safety consultations, and more.
Eligibility: Middle or high school science educators in the U.S. or U.S. territories who use/manage chemicals. Individuals or small educator teams (up to four people) may apply. Educators representing diverse identities and those engaging diverse students are strongly encouraged to apply!
Application Deadline: August 1, 2023
Notification Date: October 1, 2023
Final Reporting Deadline: December 31, 2024

Register Today for the 2023 NeuroLab
Summer Institute
The NeuroLab team is recruiting 11th and 12th-grade science teachers to participate in its 9-day professional development summer institutes. Hosted by the Coastal Marine Biolabs in Ventura Harbor, CA from July 9 to July 17, 2023, participation and curriculum materials are provided free of charge. Stipend support is also provided to eligible applicants.
The NABT Community has an extended deadline of June 10, 2023.

Neurolab institutes are immersive and intellectually challenging summer experiences designed to help teachers effectively guide their students through the NeuroLab storyline.
Teachers selected to participate in summer institutes are expected to:
- Attend all institute sessions and participate in all session activities, which will require individual or group work during evening breaks
-
Implement the NeuroLab storyline unit in an 11th or 12th grade science course (during the school year following the institute)
- Attend one or more project webinars during the school year
- Participate in an online learning community meeting at the conclusion of the school year to share your experience, offer insights, and suggest revisions or additions to curriculum resources
- Complete and administer all project-related evaluations and assessments.
The highly interdisciplinary scope of the NeuroLab experience makes it suitable for implementation in various standard, honors, advanced placement, and specialized life science courses. The clinical and medical genetics aspects of the NeuroLab experience also make it appropriate for integration into career technical education courses within health science and medical technology pathways.
Please note: School principals are required to complete and submit a recommendation form on behalf of project applicants. The primary purpose is to verify the applicant’s ability to implement the NeuroLab storyline unit and confirm that the applicant does not have conflicting professional commitments that may compromise their ability to complete the professional development experience in its entirety.

Two-Year College Faculty Invited to Explore Change in STEM with New NSF-Supported Workshop
This opportunity is for TYC faculty, staff, and administrators who want to enhance undergraduate education in a STEM-related academic department or unit. Participating TYC teams will attend a series of four workshops from August 2023 to August 2024.
Together with other STEM educators, administrators, and support staff, your team will analyze and identify approaches to change that can support STEM-related units in TYCs, and carry out a local change-related project. In addition to these activities, program outcomes include enhancing your individual skills in supporting educational change and publishing a collectively authored paper about workshop findings.
Your team will be among up to fifteen teams from different TYCs in the US to participate, and participating individuals will be supported with a stipend.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until June 1, 2023.
