Meet the New Members of the CDI Team
As a part of the Equity and Community Health team, we continue to push forward the MGH Structural Equity Ten-Point Plan, a roadmap for addressing structural and overt racism within and outside the MGH, as we strengthen and deepen our relationships in the communities we serve. This plan includes an expansion of CDI resources and programs to support and advance the Patient Care Services and research workforce. We are delighted to welcome Leah Gordon DNP, RN, CNP, FNP-C, as CDI Director for Patient Care Services, and Karen L. Osborne Greene as CDI Administrative Director for Research to help us achieve these goals.
Leah Gordon, DNP, RN, CNP, FNP-C, has been named Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) Director for Patient Care Services at Massachusetts General Hospital. She will lead diversity and inclusion activities for the Department of Patient Care Services, play a critical role in implementing initiatives within the MGH Structural Equity Plan and the expansion of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) mission, focused on advancing workforce diversity, equity, and inclusion across the hospital.
Leah will succeed Deb Washington, PhD, RN, as Diversity Director of PCS. A true pioneer in this work, Deb is now transitioning to a new role as DE&I Community Health Partnerships Manager. (See below)
Karen L. Osborne Greene has been named Administrative Director for Research in the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI). Building upon decades of diversity, equity and inclusion work by CDI and others within and outside of the Mass General, She will work with research departments/centers, investigators and administrators within and outside of MGH to help support and promote efforts that will continue to increase the diversity within the research community and ensure equity and inclusion for all.
Karen will also help to ensure that our youth are exposed to careers in healthcare and their interest and passion to assist others through careers in research is supported.

Welcome the 2021 Summer Research Trainee Program
(SRTP) Students
Save the Date for Final Presentations on July 29, August 4 & 5
The CDI is excited to continue partnering with Mass General departments to expand the pipeline of students who are underrepresented in medicine (UiM) and interested in pursuing careers in academic medicine through the Summer Research Trainee Program (SRTP.) We are delighted to welcome 29 outstanding college and medical students to the SRTP Class of 2021. Thanks to funding from the MGH 10 Pt Structural Equity Plan, we grew the program by 9 students, making this is the largest Class in SRTP history. Students are paired with MGH investigators and conduct novel research in basic science labs, clinical research sites, health policy, and health services settings over 8 weeks during the summer. The SRTP experience culminates with students presenting their research projects to the MGH community on July 29, August 4 and 5 (details to follow.)
SRTP is also funded by ECOR, the MGPO, the President’s Office and the department sponsoring the student. We are grateful to the 2021 sponsors and preceptors who make this program possible!
Students and the departments where they are matched are listed below.

Congratulation to the 2021-22 CDI Resident and Fellow Committee Board!
The CDI works closely with its Resident and Fellow Committee (RFC), an inter-departmental forum for MGH trainees who are underrepresented in medicine (UiM). The RFC is led by residents and fellows who are elected by their peers and plays a crucial role in the professional and personal development of UiM residents and fellows at Mass General. This committee assists with residency recruitment, offers opportunities to socialize and network among peers, enhance career development, and become involved in the larger Harvard and Boston communities.
Thank you to the Outgoing 2020-21 CDI Resident and Fellow Committee Board for your service!

People's heART Unveils New "OFF THE GRID" Exhibit
July 15 - August 1
The Peoples' heART is a new initiative dedicated to better supporting and reflecting the diversity of our patients, staff, and community by reinventing healthcare settings through art and design—at Mass General and beyond.
The latest Peoples’ heART installation, OFF THE GRID, was started by Alison Brookes, MD, Susan Ogan MS, MSW, and Karen Bowden. Over a six-month period, they helped individuals experiencing homelessness find their artistic voice through photography and raised money for day services at the Lynn Emergency Adult Shelter.
By displaying this collection of art at Mass General and accompanying health equity information on the website, we hope to raise community awareness while exploring the humanity and resilience of individuals experiencing homelessness.
View the exhibit while it is on display at MGH 55 Fruit St. Boston, across from Coffee Central from July 15 – August 1, and learn more at thepeoplesheart.org.
