Dear St. Anthony of Padua Catholic School Families,

Today, your students will come home with their Iowa and CogAT test results. As you recall, our 1st – 8th grade students took these exams in April. The Iowa tests are nationally normed standardized tests that offer educators a diagnostic look at how their students are progressing in key academic areas. The CogAT measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative and nonverbal questions. At St. Anthony of Padua, the faculty/staff have looked at the overall performance of all of our students. Then, in grade level meetings, teachers and administration have more closely studied individual scores as we look for trends, celebrate successes and look for areas for improvement. As a school, we are proud of our results. Our goal is to have all scores in the top quarter percentile. We reached this in ELA averaging 81.25%. In Math, we are just below this target at 72.5%. While we are happy with the scores, we are never satisfied --- always hoping to improve. We are committed to the success of our school and our students. Please make plans to attend our Parent Meeting on Wednesday, May 22nd at 8:00 am where you can learn more about the testing program and what the scores mean. Please congratulate your students on their strong performances!

Only by His Grace,

Veronica Tucker
Urgent Prayer request for Deacon Ryan Stawaisz
Note: Ryan served his pastoral-year at St. Anthony during the 2016-2017 school year.
"May I ask a favor of all to join me in praying a Novena for Deacon Ryan Stawaisz, whose Ordination to the Priesthood is this June 1, for the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston. He received some upsetting news last week.
Deacon Ryan had hip cancer surgery followed up by chemo several years ago. The cancer was removed and now his doctor found a 3 cm mass in his lung which is inoperable. Dcn. Ryan and his parents met with the oncologist and heard the results on Wednesday. The Dr. has advised for him to begin chemo treatments this coming Wednesday. We are beginning a Novena to St. Peregrine on Monday, May 13th – Tuesday, May 21st and it would be great if everyone would sincerely pray the novena for Dcn. Ryan’s complete healing. St. Peregrine was an Italian monk who had a cancerous sore on his leg. They planned an amputation for Peregrine. The night before the operation, he prayed in front of a crucifix and saw Jesus come down to touch his leg. He woke the next morning completely healed. Therefore, he is the patron of those with cancer.
O great St. Peregrine, you have been called "the Mighty" and "the Wonder-Worker" because of the numerous miracles which you have obtained from God for those who have had recourse to you. For so many years you bore in your own flesh this cancerous disease that destroys the very fiber of our being, and who had recourse to the source of all grace when the power of man could do no more. You were favored with the vision of Jesus coming down from His Cross to heal your affliction. Ask of God and Our Lady, the cure of these sick persons whom we entrust to you. Aided in this way by your powerful intercession, we shall sing to God, now and for all eternity, a song of gratitude for His great goodness and mercy. St. Peregrine, your faith changed the lives of thousands. Help my faith to grow until it, too, becomes a force for good in my world. And, please offer your prayers in union with ours that Ryan is healed of this infirmity. Amen.
Praying the Lord will grant mercy & healing for this young man!! Please share with any other prayer groups! Thank you!!"

From "Thuc" Dominic Nguyen , who will be ordained a Transitional Deacon this Saturday 5/18 - Thuc served his pastoral-year at St. Anthony during the 2017-2018 school year.

A reminder to parents to please be diligent over the summer break on what your child is viewing on social media through their devices.

What can parents do? :
  • Spend time online together to teach your child appropriate online behavior.
  • Keep an eye on your child’s internet usage.
  • Consider age appropriateness for child’s use of technology, time spent on social media and overall reminders of family expectations for making good choices.
  • Ask your child if they know about dangerous online challenges and engage in conversations about safe technology use.
  • Children should never respond to unidentified messages on social media and parents should advise their children never share personal data, photographs, phone numbers on the internet including creating usernames or IDs with real names/locations
  • Keep the computer in a common area where you can watch and monitor its use, not in individual bedrooms. Monitor any time spent on smartphones or tables.
  • Bookmark kids’ favorite sites for easy access.
  • View the sites your child has access and look for any pop-ups or unsafe advertisements.
  • Research online apps that monitor your child’s search engine and usage.
  • If a child is spending the night at a family member or friends ask about their home internet safety measures and usage.
Help us welcome new families to our school community and make new friends! You can also earn Paduan Points over the summer!
