Director's Corner
Future and Growth
By Dr. Karen Arnstein
| |
As I sit here with my hot cup of coffee on a fall morning, I think about what the future will look like. SENG has settled comfortably into this new century, and with hard work and dedication, it is poised to remain a strong, supportive organization into the future. Although my time is almost up as a SENG board member, I am proud of the work everyone put forth to modernize this important organization. As a parent of a twice-exceptional teenager, SENG still plays an important role in my life, and I will be forever grateful for the lifeline they extended to me in the early days. I’m sure many of you may feel the same. During this season of giving thanks, I am thankful for SENG, the experiences, and friends I have made along the way, as well as the professional growth gained during my time as a board member. I am thankful I had the opportunity to give back, or as some say, pay it forward.
Yet, it is a privilege to reflect upon the future in my climate-controlled home, confident in knowledge that I will have food and clean drinking water. With all the comforts we enjoy in the United States, the future seems uncertain. War in the middle east has sparked several conversations as my son navigates heated conversations at school. On Thursday, October 12th, I was bluntly reminded of my privilege as I debated whether my child should go to school the next day. Do all parents feel this way around the world? Thankfully, that sick feeling lasted only a few hours. I cannot imagine living with this worry and fear every day.

News Release
National Association for Gifted Children and
Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted Enter Partnership
| |
Washington, DC (October 25, 2023) – The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) and Supporting Emotional Needs of the Gifted (SENG) are excited to announce the signing of a partnership agreement between the two gifted-education-focused organizations.
| |
Over the next five years, NAGC and SENG will work cooperatively to advance the field of gifted education and further support the needs of gifted and talented students. Initiatives in this agreement include presenting at each organization’s annual conference, sharing resources and best practices through a knowledge exchange, and jointly creating webinars, workshops, and other training opportunities for educators and other professionals working with gifted children..
"Partnering with SENG is a tremendous opportunity to unite our shared visions and support the needs of children with advanced abilities," said NAGC Executive Director John Segota. "I look forward to strengthening the relationship between NAGC and SENG so we can expand our efforts to reach as many educators, families, and children as possible," he concluded.
SENG Executive Director Heather Pace stated, “We are thrilled to partner with NAGC to support the emotional needs of gifted children. Gifted children often face unique challenges, and it is important to ensure they and those caring for them have the resources and support they need to thrive. This partnership will allow us to reach a wider audience and make a greater impact.”

Are gifted students different from their peers in ways that go beyond intelligence? This session will present a look at research on Openness to Experience and Overexcitabilities, their similarities and differences, and trends that help describe some of the sometimes hard-to-capture differences between gifted students and their peers. Research suggests that being highly Open is associated with creativity, and that high levels of Openness coincide with the presence of multiple overexcitabilities; we will consider the implications of that for students’ fit in traditional school environments. We’ll take a look at Conscientiousness, too! | |
