Mac Schweitzer: A Southwest Maverick Rediscovered

For more than six decades, her work as a pioneering female artist was hidden from view. Now, her bold original works are revealed for the very first time in this year-long retrospective exhibition at Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West.

Correction: Admission to the museum is free on Scottsdale's ArtWalk evenings only to Scottsdale residents, who need to present their ID at the front desk. Many neighboring galleries are open for everyone! Thursdays evenings, 7-9 pm, from November to April.

Historian Betsy Fahlman and anthropologist & gallerist Mark Bahti will join Ann Hedlund to discuss "Rediscovering Mac S." Join us at Western Spirit on Thursday, Nov. 20th, 6 - 8 pm, to learn why the SW artist's legacy disappeared over sixty years ago and how her brilliant work and career are being revived. On Monday, December 1st, 6-7:30 pm (SIX PM to Seven:Thirty PM!), join us at Bookworks in Albuquerque for an exciting conversation featuring Tom White, Mac's son and a well-known ABQ chef, brewmeister, and restaurant owner, along with author Ann Hedlund.

February 2026 events in downtown Silver City, New Mexico!

Flash Gallery at Light Art Space will host a showing of lithographs by Mac Schweitzer and photographs by Larry Ollivier from February 5 to 28, 2026. The exhibit opens in time for a first Friday ArtWalk on Feb. 5, 5 - 7 pm. On Sunday, February 8, 2026, 3 - 4:30 pm, join us for Ann Hedlund's illustrated talk and booksigning.
