BCA remembers Valerie Deas, a prolific Bronx artist, art educator, and BCA grantee whose multimedia work, combining painting and textiles, earned her accolades across the industry. With deep sadness, we celebrate a life filled with creativity, resilience, and unwavering dedication to her craft.
Touted as âthe fabric whispererâ by Textile Artist, Deas work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally in spaces like Lincoln Center, Rush Gallery, Kente Royal Gallery, and more. Her quilts have been touring with the African American Fiber Art Exhibition throughout the country. Awarded a City Artist Corps Grant to bring her artwork to her community, Deas was also a Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA) Community Engagement Grantee for two consecutive years (2022 and 2023).
We extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her. May her art and spirit continue to brighten our lives, reminding us of the enduring power of creativity and compassion.
