JPS PARTNERSHIPS SELECTED FOR 2020 GOVERNOR'S & PARTNERSHIP EXCELLENCE AWARDS
Five JPS school-community partnerships have been selected for 2020 Mississippi Association of Partners in Education Governor's and Partnership Excellence Awards. The JPS honorees are:

JPS ACHIEVES 15 PREPS VALUE-ADDED AWARDS
Jackson Public Schools received 15 Value-Added Awards presented by the Program of Research and Evaluation for Public Schools. Winners will be honored at an awards luncheon and ceremony to be held Friday, March 6, in conjunction with the PREPS/MAPE Partnership Conference.

The Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science (MSMS) brought its Traveling STEM Carnival to Kirksey Middle School in February. Approximately 1,300 JPS fourth-graders participated in the carnival's highly engaging educational activities. MSMS students and faculty used interactive lessons to teach our scholars principles in STEM.

VETERAN EDUCATOR AT BATES NAMED JPS COUNSELOR OF THE YEAR
Joice Greer of Bates Elementary was named the 2019-2020 JPS Counselor of the Year in recognition of National School Counseling Week. Ebonie Butler-Cheeks of Forest Hill, Adrienne Fleming of Early College High School, Whitney Gray of McWillie, and LaShonda Turner of Timberlawn also received special counseling awards.

SAMUNIQUE BLACKMON OF CALLAWAY NAMED JPS JROTC CADET OF THE YEAR
JROTC cadet Samunique Blackmon of Callaway was named the 2020 JPS Cadet of the Year at an awards dinner held February 13. Also recognized were finalists Christine Wooten of Forest Hill, Tyra Patterson of Jim Hill, Christopher Washington of Lanier, Jerica James of Murrah, Heaven Thomas of Provine, and Ramiyah Thompson of Wingfield.

MOOD THERAPY APP CREATED BY CDC STUDENTS WINS 2019 CONGRESSIONAL APP CHALLENGE
Shamar Stamps, Shamya Robinson, and Kameron Lewis created the national award-winning app, Canetis Cure. They are students of the Simulation and Animation Design Technology Program at the JPS Career Development Center and members of the Technology Student Association.

JPS TOP SPELLER TAKES 2ND PLACE IN HINDS COUNTY SPELLING BEE
Amerie Thomas, a fifth-grader at Barack Obama Magnet School, was named runner up in the 2020 Hinds County Spelling Bee. Amerie has attended Obama Magnet since kindergarten. She is involved in the school's STEM Club, Pep Squad, and Junior Beta Honor Society and serves as a school ambassador.

JPS SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES 2020-2021 DISTRICT CALENDAR
The  2020-2021 JPS District Calendar  has been approved by the Board of Trustees and is available for your planning purposes . The first day for students is Monday, August 10. Five breaks have been designated inclement weather days to make up for missed due to unplanned closures. Click Read More for details.

MICHELLE OBAMA SCHOLAR ACCEPTED TO DISNEY DREAMERS ACADEMY
Mauricsa Woods, a sophomore at the Michelle Obama Early College High School, will be spending four days this summer at the Disney Dreamers Academy. The program accepts only 100 applications out of thousands a year. It exists to equip dreamers with the motivation, guidance, and skills to make their dreams come true.

CASEY ELEMENTARY SCHOLARS WIN DIVISION IN FALL STOCK MARKET GAME
Casey Elementary scholars Austin Dean, Makynzie Horton, and Roman Jones Reed outperformed the S&P 500 by 3.36% to win their division in the Mississippi Stock Market Game.

CALLAWAY MUSICIAN WINS OPPORTUNITY TO MARCH WITH ELITE MISSISSIPPI LIONS BAND
The hard work of a gifted trombone player has earned him a spot with the Mississippi Lions All-State Band. William Hulbert, a junior at Callaway High School, will travel with the Lions Band to Honolulu this summer to compete at the Lions Club International Convention. Out of an average of 800 applicants statewide each year, less than 200 are selected to perform.

SPANN ELEMENTARY PRINCIPAL NAMED TO ADMINISTRATOR ADVISORY COUNCIL
Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann named Spann Principal Lori Torrey to serve on a 19-member Administrator Advisory Council designed to provide input from Mississippi's public educators. Torrey has served as an administrator at Spann since 2015. She started her career as a teacher at Siwell Middle School in 1999.

These special awards were presented to recognize the outstanding contributions of four JPS employees and one parent at our 2020 Spring Convocation:

JPS BASKETBALL TEAMS IN STATE QUARTERFINALS
Five JPS teams will be playing in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Basketball quarterfinals on Saturday, February 29 . Games are as follows:

JPS SENIOR ATHLETES COMMIT TO COLLEGES AT NATIONAL SIGNING DAY CELEBRATIONS
JPS high schools hosted signing day events on National Signing Day, Wednesday, February 5. While some of our senior-athletes are still weighing their options, at least 20 announced the schools they will be playing for next year.

NORTH TEAM VICTORIOUS IN 2020 SOCCER ALL-STAR GAME
The North Team (Callaway, Murrah, and Provine) defeated the South Team (Forest Hill, Jim Hill, and Wingfield) by a final score of 7–3.

NORTHWEST AND HARDY CLAIM JPS MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Congratulations to Northwest Lady Wolverines on winning the girls' title and the Hardy Panthers on winning the boys' title.

2019 PEPSI-JPS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONS
Congratulations to the Murrah girls and the Wingfield boys basketball teams. They are the 2019 Pepsi-JPS Holiday Basketball Tournament champions.

JANUARY 7, 2020
Frank Figgers, Cydnee Burgess
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Cydnee Burdgess, a sophomore IB scholar at Jim Hill High School. The JROTC first lieutenant is a TAP mediator and a member of the Student Government Association, the Tigerettes dance team, and the Jim Hill Symphonic Band. She plans to attend Mississippi State after high school and major in Paleontology.
Power APAC visual artists display their winning works
Power APAC Visual Artists Recognized
Four Power APAC visual arts students received awards and cash prizes at the "Outstanding Artists and Artisans of the Future" art show. Senior Charles Rounds was awarded Best of Show, indicating that his was the most outstanding of all entries in the competition. Moriah Roland, a junior, and Desmond Young, a senior, received High Merit awards. Junior Sara Dumas received an Honorable Mention award. More than 35 works by Power APAC students were selected for display at the show.

Robert Luckett and Wisdom Garden
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Wisdom Garden, a sophomore at Lanier High School. She is a member of the National Honor Society and serves as secretary in the Student Government Association. She is also a Health Sciences Academy student. Wisdom aspires to graduate as valedictorian and go on to Mississippi State as a pre-med major.
Caleb Rhodes and Dr. Errick Greene
Caleb John-Ethan Rhodes delivered the Words of Encouragement . Caleb is a sophomore at Forest Hill High School. He is class president and a member of the Superintendent's Advisory Council, the National Honor Society, National Beta Club, and JROTC. He plans to graduate valedictorian and join the U.S. Army continuing his work in mortuary affairs.

Frank Figgers and Jiya Ledbetter
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jiya Ledbetter , a fifth-grade honor roll student at Bates Elementary School. She serves as president of the Student Government Association, and she is a member of the Beta Honor Club. Jiya was featured in the MADDRAMA-JPS Style performance at Spring Convocation. She strives to make good grades and help others. She attends Greater Antioch Baptist Church. Jiya loves dancing, spending time with friends, and shopping.
Robert Luckett and Iesha Hayes
Iesha D. Hayes delivered the Words of Encouragement. Iesha is a proud Jim Hill Tiger and a senior in the IB program at the school. She has been writing poetry since the age of nine. Impressed with her writing skills and creativity, Iesha's sixth-grade teacher helped her to start a writing club called the Prodigy Experience. The group won first place in its first competition. She belongs to two groups that allow her to refine her poetry and songwriting talent: The Mind Evaluation Project and My Voice.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Ayla Hatcher , a fifth-grader at Casey Elementary School. When she is not reading or baking new recipes, Ayla is busy making plans to become an international fashion designer. She is a proud member of the National Elementary Honor Society, Strings in the School, All City Choir, and the Judah School of Performing Arts.
Josiah Calvert and Dr. Errick Greene
Josiah Calvert delivered the Words of Encouragement . He is an honor roll student and accomplished visual arts student at Power APAC. As a national winner in the Celebrating Art Competition, his work will be featured in the contest's 2020 publication. Josiah is also a published author of two children's stories and a book of short stories and poems.
