Memphis, TN – The Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) is honoring the life and legacy of William Hudson, the first black President and General Manager of our organization. His family will be present for this celebration, which will include a bus unveiling and a reception that follows.
Hudson quickly rose through the ranks and became President and General Manager in 1993 until he retired in 2013. His leadership at MATA produced successful accomplishments including the completion of Central Station, the Riverfront and Madison Trolley rail lines, and the Airways, American Way, and North End Transit Centers (the latter was renamed after Hudson retired from MATA).
"As I step into the role as the first Black woman to head up MATA, it only seemed appropriate to first honor the person who paved the way, especially during Black History Month," said Bacarra Mauldin, interim CEO of MATA. "Mr. Hudson is still fondly remembered by our retirees and some of our current staff and riders. I look forward to building on the foundation that he set."
On February 29, MATA will honor William Hudson's accomplishments. Join us at the Hudson Transit Center at 444 S. Main St.
