 Letter from the Library Director

Debra Rhodes Gibson

Library Director

St. Johns County Public Library

This time of year is one of reflection, wrapping last-minute gifts, spending time with family and friends, and making resolutions for the New Year. I want to extend my deepest appreciation to each of you who has made 2023 an extraordinary year for SJCPLS.

I am overwhelmed with gratitude for our donors, volunteers, and sponsors whose unwavering support has been the bedrock of our achievements. Each donation made, every hour volunteered, and every partnership forged has been instrumental in pushing SJCPLS toward our shared vision of serving the literacy needs of St. Johns County residents of all ages. Our libraries have a powerful impact not only on the people we work with directly but also on the larger community. It is an honor for our library staff and me to serve you.

HIGHLIGHTS

Food for Fines Returns!

We are excited to announce that the popular Food for Fines program has returned this year to St. Johns County libraries and bookmobiles! An opportunity to eliminate overdue library fines, Food for Fines will run through Friday, Dec. 22. The food items collected will be used to stock the St. Johns County Health and Human Services (HHS) Food Pantry, providing food for St. Johns County families in need.

A donation of one non-perishable, unexpired food item will remove $2 of fines from a patron’s library record. This fine-reduction program applies only to overdue fines and patrons may bring in as many items as needed to reduce overdue fines. Fees related to damaged or lost items are not included in the Food for Fines program. Visit our website for more information.

St. Johns Reads 2024

We are pleased to announce the book selection for St. Johns Reads 2024 is "The Reading List," by Sara Nisha Adams! An unforgettable and heartwarming debut, "The Reading List" is about how a chance encounter with a list of library books helps forge an unlikely friendship between two very different people in a London suburb. This book is currently available through the library in print, large print, audiobook, and on Libby in e-book and e-audiobook.

In its 20th year, St. Johns Reads is SJCPLS’ annual “One Book, One Community” event focused on creating a shared conversation on a selected novel. Taking place in January, St. Johns Reads 2024 features a month-long celebration with a variety of programs inspired by “The Reading List,” including special events with the author, Sara Nisha Adams, at each branch library from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2. St. Johns Reads is generously supported by the SJCPLS’ Friends of the Library groups. To learn more about the events with Sara Nisha Adams or other St. Johns Reads programming, please visit https://www.sjcpls.org/st-johns-reads.

Funding for this program was provided through a grant from Florida Humanities with funds from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of Florida Humanities or the National Endowment for the Humanities.
