A Message from the Vice Chancellor

Hi Student Affairs Team,

With the merriment of LDOC behind us and Commencement a week away, I know many of you are busier than ever, but it is not too early for some self-congratulations! We have made it (nearly) to the end of a very tough year, and I want to thank everyone for your commitment, tenacity and great work! I hope that all of you can use some part of the summer for rest, recovery and FUN, while gearing up for what should be a busy, in-person fall semester that is closer to "normal."

Thanks to everyone who responded to the Student Affairs Racial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Audit. We hope the results and the dialogue around the results will be valuable to fostering continued changes and an inclusive and respectful staff culture within your Department and Student Affairs.

I hope you saw our announcement about Christi Hurt returning to Carolina as the new senior prevention strategy officer this summer. We are excited to welcome her back in this role!

As always, thanks for all you do,
Amy

Carolina Housing

Residence Hall Re-Naming Process
Carolina Housing and the Residence Hall Association (RHA) have been dedicated to addressing Residence Hall names so they better align with the department's mission to create a space that is: "Safe, Inclusive, and Supportive." Since the 2020 Summer, the RHA President has been heavily involved in the process to remove the first four building names on campus and consider ways to go about re-naming.

As a follow-up to our Mental Health Town Hall last week, we wanted to share this podcast on the topic of stress and tips for making it through as an additional support tool.

The light at the end of the COVID tunnel is tenuously appearing - yet many of us feel as exhausted as at any time in the past year. Memory problems; short fuses; fractured productivity; sudden drops into despair. We’re at once excited and unnerved by the prospect of life opening up again. Clinical psychologist Christine Runyan explains the physiological effects of a year of pandemic and social isolation - what’s happened at the level of stress response and nervous system, the literal mind-body connection. And she offers simple strategies to regain our fullest capacities for the world ahead.

Virtual Spring Fling!
It’s not too late to join us for this year’s virtual Spring Fling Fun Run and Walk. Join us for a 5K walk/run wherever you can this May, between Monday, May 3 – Sunday, May 9, 2021. There is no set location — just run, walk or jog at your pace, either outside or inside on a treadmill. Even though we can’t get together in person and dress up as departments this year, we hope that departments will choose to participate virtually and even dress up! You can share your selfies with us or post on Instagram by using @unccampusrec and @uncstudentaffairsWe plan to celebrate the Student Affairs departments that have the highest percentage of participants and the department that is the most creative with your costumes.
