August 13th: 8/13/1881

Spelman College in Atlanta, Ga. opened the first African American nursing school. African Americans seeking hospital care, especially in the South, were not admitted into white hospitals and only a limited number of nursing programs were accepting African American students. This created a need for nursing schools for students and led Atlanta Baptist Female Seminary, later Spelman College, to establish the first nursing school.
