Dear Reader:
Yesterday, my social media platforms connected to Chile lit up with the news that for the first time in history, Chile has two nominations to the Oscars: Best Documentary, "La memoria infinita" ("The Eternal Memory") directed by Maite Alberdi, and Best Cinematography, "El Conde", directed by Pablo Larraín. The Best Cinematography honor goes to the American, award winning, cinematographer and director, Edward Lachman. Pablo Larraín and his brother Juan de Dios Larraín founded the Chilean production company Fábula, now based in Los Angeles, CA. Fábula already has an Oscar to it's credit when "Una mujer fantástica" ("A Fantastic Woman") (2017), directed by Sebastián Lelio, won Best Foreign Language Film.
The film “Los colonos” (“The Settlers”), Chile’s Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film this year, did not receive a nomination. I have a faint suspicion that the subject is too close to Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.”
“Los colonos” Felipe Gálvez’s directorial debut, had its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival, on May 17, 2023. It competed for Un Certain Regard and Caméra d’Or, and alongside those was honored with the FIPRESCI Prize, becoming the first Chilean production to win the award.
Chile's film industry is soaring. The number of filmmakers making their mark and winning important festivals is outstanding.
“Los colonos” is playing at the Roxie Theatre from January 25th to the 28th. On Saturday the film starts at 1:00pm, so swing by Chile Lindo after the show. We’re only a couple of blocks away.
