Dear Jardineros Members,
Please note I made a mistake on the date of our October meeting - it is Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024. I apologize for the confusion. And apologies to Jayne Schultz for the misspelling of her name.
Well, here we are in October! Pumpkins are starting to appear at every grocery store and on every corner. And thoughts of ghosts and goblins are hard to stifle. We have shorter days and cooler nights. And if the weather gets on track, our days will also cool off soon. I know my activity level picks up this time of year and that is a good thing as we have lots to look forward to beginning with our October meeting.
Our meeting this month will begin at 9:00 on Wednesday, October 2nd at the Las Placitas Presbyterian Church with light refreshments and visiting. At 9:30 we will begin with announcements and a short presentation about our October Community Service collection for Seed2Need, a volunteer organization located in Corrales where volunteers maintain 1.5 acres of vegetables and two orchards with 140 fruit trees. Support from organizations like Jardineros allows them to purchase yearly supplies needed for planning, planting, and harvesting produce for five food pantries in two counties including Casa Rosa here in Placitas. Geri Verble and Tricia Lund, the liaisons for this collection, will be accepting cash and checks. Please make your check payable to Seed2Need and write “Jardineros donation” on the memo line. If you are unable to attend the meeting and wish to donate, mail your check to Seed2Need, P.O. Box 874, Corrales, NM 87048. You can also donate online at Seed2Need. If you donate this way, please let Geri or Tricia know as it is not possible to annotate Jardineros donation on the online form.
Next on the agenda will be our program on Ghost Town Getaways – really appropriate for October, don’t you agree? Kate Nelson, New Mexico Magazine’s now-retired “Field Trip Queen” will tell us all about her favorite New Mexico ghost towns. From day trips to over-nighters, Kate will regale us with tales of historic and sometimes mysterious locations to visit in our beautiful state. I know October is my favorite month for spontaneous day trips to see the beautiful changes of scenery and what a great opportunity to add a ghost town or two to those trips!
After our program we will break for more treats and visiting and then resume for our business meeting. Before the meeting begins at 9:30 and during the break, you will be able to renew your membership for 2025. Please bring a check made out to Jardineros de Placitas for $75 for your 2025 membership dues. We would like to get as many renewals in October as possible and this will ensure your inclusion in the 2025 Yearbook/Directory. If you are unable to attend this meeting, you may mail your dues check to Jardineros de Placitas at P.O. Box 704 in Placitas, NM 87043.
Please also be thinking about what Jardineros activities, committees and interest groups you might like to participate in next year. The Membership Committee will have sign-up sheets and information for you. Occasionally some of our groups may have caps on group membership numbers due to the nature of the group and where they meet. You may need to be on a waiting list or perhaps consider starting a new group. Our Membership Committee will be happy to provide guidance.
If you are interested in co-chairing a committee, we have an opportunity for you. The current chair of the Refreshment Committee, Jane Garland, who has done a wonderful job for two years, will be stepping down in 2025. At this time, we have one volunteer who has agreed to follow Jane if someone will volunteer to co-chair the Refreshment Committee with her. As an added incentive, the Healthy Living Interest Group has volunteered to assume responsibility for refreshments in February and August as part of the 60th Anniversary celebrations. As a result of this plan, the co-chairs would only be responsible for nine months since the Board of Directors is responsible for the December refreshments every year. If you are interested, please see Jane for more information.
We have another volunteer opportunity for someone who would be interested in chairing the Yearbook Committee next year. The current chair, Jayne Schultz, will be stepping down after doing an outstanding job for two years. Most of the work done by this committee happens in the last quarter of the calendar year and requires good computer skills. The next chair of this committee will be able to work with Jayne now to prepare the 2025 Yearbook. If you are interested in this, please talk to Jayne Schultz.
Before our October 3rd meeting, please review the September 4th Jardineros Meeting Minutes. Minutes are posted in our annual binder on the Jardineros website (right sidebar, click on 2024 meeting minutes link).
Our last scheduled Board of Directors meeting for this year will take place on Thursday, October 10th at 10:00 am at the Placitas Community Library. Board of Director meetings are open to all Jardineros members.
Enjoy October and hope to see you at our meeting on the 3rd.
