I-57 lane expansion begins in Jefferson County

A lane expansion and bridge replacement project has begun on Interstate 57 from Atchison Creek near mile marker 85 to mile marker 92 south of Mount Vernon in Jefferson County. To accommodate the work, westbound I-64 to the southbound I-57 entrance ramp will be closed until early 2026. The public should expect various nightly lane closures and lane shifts throughout the project. A detour will be in place to safely guide motorists around the closure.

The overall $51.9 million project, which consists of building an additional lane in both directions as well as storm sewers and drainage structures, installing a median barrier, resurfacing, replacing the existing bridge and installing deck overlay, is expected to be completed by summer 2027.

Additional I-57 southern Illinois corridor projects

  • I-57 at Illinois 149 (exit 65) in West Frankfort: Work began in August to reconstruct and convert the Illinois 149/I-57 intersections into two modern roundabouts with new lighting and drainage improvements. The $6.3 million project will also include bridge repairs and safety enhancements, with pedestrian and bicycle accommodations. The overall project is expected to be completed in 2025.
  • I-57, mileposts 66-75: Expansion to six lanes and replacement of bridges over the Big Muddy River in Jackson County began in spring 2022 and is anticipated to be completed in 2025. Nighttime lane closures are anticipated.
  • I-57, mileposts 75-85: Expansion to six lanes and replacement of bridges over Marcum Branch and Gun Creek in Franklin County begins in 2025 and is anticipated to be completed in 2028. Nighttime lane closures are anticipated.
  • I-57/64, Illinois 15 interchange (exit 95): Reconstruction in Mount Vernon is anticipated to begin in 2025. Nighttime lane closures are anticipated.

Feature photo: New I-270 Dynamic Message Sign installed in Madison County

A new Dynamic Message Sign went up late October on eastbound I-270 in Madison County in the Metro East. The project, made possible by Gov. Pritzker’s historic, bipartisan Rebuild Illinois capital program, required a full closure of eastbound I-270 between Illinois 3 and Riverview Drive in Missouri for approximately one hour overnight to accommodate the sign installation.

Region 3, District 4: The eastbound McClugage bridge reached another step closer to opening with the pouring of the last bridge deck. Other final touches included a brass compass set to true north on the bridge’s overlook.

The bridge is expected to open in mid-December. Visit www.mcclugagebridge.com for more information.

Region 5, District 8: IDOT joined Madison County Transit, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and state and local officials for a ribbon cutting to open the new MCT Yellowhammer Connector trail on SIUE’s campus. The trail, funded by a $2.9 million Rebuild Illinois grant, offers a direct bike/pedestrian connection to SIUE, the 138-mile MCT Trails system and local communities.

The 2,400-foot-long MCT Yellowhammer Connector runs from the northeastern end of the SIUE Delyte Morris Trail to the MCT Goshen Trail south of New Poag Road.
