Joy: Fully Lutheran

This is the theme for the 67thconvention of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. The convention will be held in Tampa, Florida, July 20-25, 2019. At this convention representatives from voting circuits throughout the United States will meet to worship, elect officers and make decisions which will guide the Synod in the next three years.

I am writing about the Convention this year because I have been elected as the pastoral delegate for our circuit. This means I will be in Tampa Florida, July 20 through 25. This will be the third national convention that I have served as a delegate.

In the next few weeks I will be studying the convention workbook in order to be informed on the issues the convention will address. If you go to LCMS.org the convention resources are online. You can even watch the convention live on your computer.

I would ask you to pray for this convention. The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod is a creedal and confessional church. God gives us his Word in Christ. God reveals Christ and his truth in the Sacred scripture. The church stands on the inerrant, inspired, Word of God. The teachings of the church are based on the Word of God. The confessional documents we adhere to are governed by the Word of God.

The central teaching of our church is that we are sinners saved by grace. We are saved for Christ sake without any merit or worthiness on our part. "Our congregations accept and preach the Bible-based teachings of Martin Luther that inspired the reformation of the Christian Church in the 16th century. The teachings of Luther and the reformers can be summarized in three phrases: Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone." (LCMS.org)

The convention theme "Joy: Fully Lutheran" comes from 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." This is great guidance to follow from Scripture every day. We should be thankful and joyful because we are the redeemed and chosen children of God saved by grace. We are called to share this joy.

The challenges the LCMS faces are the same challenges we face locally. The church in the US is numerically declining even though the church is growing internationally. This decline causes financial difficulties. There are many resolutions that address these challenges. Ultimately, God will preserve and defend his church. We are called to remain faithful to the Word of God and worship.

In our world filled with Idolatry and selfishness, serving one God and serving others is not a popular behavior. This is what God calls us to do. He calls us to be faithful and joyful. We can wring our hands in fear and concern, or we can: "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." The Lord will provide for his children.

VBS - a huge success!
Our Miraculous Mission VBS in June was a huge success! We had over 20 children attend each night. The kids learned about the creation of the world, God keeping his promises to Abraham, the birth of Christ, and Christ's resurrection. Our evening started off with a dinner served by members of the congregation, and then we had an opening with songs and a video. This was followed by the lesson and craft activity. We even found time for some games!   This year we broke the kids into two groups for the lesson and crafts so it was more age appropriate. After this time, we all came together again for the closing.   I would like to send a big THANK YOU to those who helped with the meals each night, teaching or helping with the kids, music, technology, and crafts. We couldn't have done it without your help! The kids had a great time learning about our Savior. I would also like to thank the parents and other family members who brought the children to attend each night. Everyone had a great time!

Looking for Youth Group Leaders
giving-hands-together.jpg
We are looking for caring, authentic, faith-filled adults to plan, lead and run our Junior/Senior high youth group. This is an amazing group of kids with great hearts and personalities as well as great parents to work with. The time has come, after 6 years, for Gerry and Michelle Eickhoff to pass the torch onto someone else. Anyone 21 years or older can serve in this role.

If you are interested in serving and feel the holy spirit moving you to fill the need as our next Youth Group Leaders, please contact Pastor ([email protected] or 837-4502).  If you have any questions about what being an adult youth leader entails, please contact Michelle &/or Gerry Eickhoff @ 913-837-5276 or at [email protected].

Donations and a Prayer Envelopes Fundraiser
Please help our young people reach their destination - the National Youth Gathering in Minneapolis, Minnesota, July 11-15.  We leave in one and half weeks and we need our envelopes and prayers to be filled!

By selecting a numbered envelope from the display in the narthex in the next two weeks, your chosen donation will help us reach our fundraising goal. Each envelope is numbered sequentially from 1 to 50. Each envelope contains the corresponding dollar amount; as well as a prayer request card from our youth.

We invite and encourage you to offer a donation to our young members, and help us with their prayer requests in the process.  Just return your envelope in the marked bucket on the counter near the poster and please hold onto the prayer request and pray it.

It's with your support, since 2013, these young people and their adult chaperons have been afforded the opportunity to encounter Christ and his church on the national level.

From all our travelers to you our Christ Our Savior community we say THANK YOU in advance!!

National Youth Gathering - We leave in one and a half weeks!
Here are a few things we'd like to share with you!

To begin, we will have a Commissioning Service for all the youth and adults on Sunday, July 7 who are going to the gathering during the 8:00 a.m. service.  This is a wonderful service to help pray for us during our trip, during our experience at the gathering and our way back home.

We leave C.O.S. on Wednesday, July 10 at 6:00 a.m. if anyone would like to come and send us off.  We should arrive in Minneapolis sometime between 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.

We are staying at the Doubletree - University Area.  On Thursday morning, I'll be at meetings while the kids sleep in a bit and then we'll be off to explore Minneapolis.  Then we will join the rest of the Kansas District at 3:00 for a District Event at the "Bowlero" for some bowling, laser tag, food and fun.  After this we load onto the buses and back to US Bank Stadium for the first Mass Event Kick-off.  We will stay for the Mass event plus attend Toby Mac in concert.

Friday- We are planning on going to Bible study in the morning, then off to our interest center sessions and/or concerts and mass event in the evening with I Am They.

Saturday - We start the day off at Bible study then off to our interest center sessions and/or concerts and mass event in the evening with Skit Guys.

Sunday - is a little different for us.  We will be participating in Habitat for Humanity in a service Immersion.  It is 90 minute participation where we will be helping to build a house on-site at the convention center.  We will be doing this from Noon - 1:30 p.m.  There is no Mass event planned for this evening.  We also have six in our group who are participating in the 5K run/walk that supports " Feed My Starving Children" ( goal of providing 1,000,000+ meals for those in need).  Those participants are:  Gerry & Michelle Eickhoff, Koell Smith, Tricia, Allison & Grace Walania.  Way to go!!

Monday- We will check out of our hotel and go to the Mass Worship Service from 9:00 a.m. to Noon.  We will go out to eat lunch and plan to leave Minneapolis by 3:00 p.m.  We hope to arrive back at C.O.S. between 11:00 p.m. and midnight.
