Trade Case Threatening Solar Industry Heats Up
More than 300 people attended an August 15 hearing before the International Trade Commission on the Suniva trade case, marking the biggest crowd ever at such an event. Many came to oppose the request for tariff protections, arguing that most solar workers and companies would be hurt if tariffs are imposed that could double the cost of U.S. solar panels.
COSEIA worked hard this summer to garner support among member companies and Congressional Representatives to oppose the trade case petition. Both U.S. Senators Cory Gardner and Michael Bennet, along with Reps. Dianne DeGette, Jared Polis and Ed Perlmutter signed letters opposing the petition. Thanks to all of them for their support of Colorado solar jobs! If you live in a district represented by another Representative, please ask them to sign on.

Jefferson County wins "SolSmart Gold'' designation
Jefferson County this week received a ``SolSmart Gold'' designation
for its efforts to make it faster, easier and more affordable for residents to go solar. COSEIA has been working with Jefferson County as a SolSmart advisor to help the county achieve designation. Jefferson County, among the state's most populous, gained the recognition for its efforts to eliminate barriers to solar energy. Among the county's practices that were cited are allowing online submissions and eliminating excess inspections. Jefferson County is one of more than a dozen Colorado cities and counties that COSEIA is working with through a contract with SolSmart in hopes of getting the national recognition. Many of them previously worked with COSEIA's Solar Friendly Communities program.
Solar Ready Colorado Partnership Provides Training
COSEIA is again partnering with Solar Energy International's (SEI) on the Solar Ready Colorado initiative. Recently, SEI received the 2017 IREC State/Local Government Achievement of the Year award for the statewide training and career outreach program funded through the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment's WORK Act Grant.
The Solar Ready Colorado program was honored for its innovative approaches to outreach, especially the Solar Ready Colorado Career Expo and Envision360 Virtual Reality project. The Career Expo was co-sponsored by project partners COSEIA and GRID Alternatives Colorado at COSEIA's annual Solar Power Colorado conference. More than 150 job seekers attended the expo and engaged with Colorado solar companies about the jobs available in this growing industry. The partners will once again present the Career Expo event at the newly expanded Solar Power Mountain West conference slated for March 12-14 2018.
