Dear Pool Owners,

On Friday, May 15, 2020, the San Mateo County Pool Program received the Health Officer’s Order regarding the reopening of public pools. We are excited that San Mateo County residents now have a new option for exercise during this unprecedented time. Spas must continue to remain closed per this Order.

We received many inquiries about how to safely open public pools. Please use the following documents and guidelines to keep your pool and the San Mateo County community safe.

HEALTH OFFICER ORDER DOCUMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Please adhere to the Health Officer's Order for pools and post* the following documents in a conspicuous place for patrons and law enforcement to easily view while allowing your pool to operate:

* Protect all documents from water damage by laminating or use of a protective sleeve.

POOL SAFETY GUIDELINES:
  • Pool operators (i.e., HOA, apartment and hotel management) are legally responsible for ensuring the pool’s operation is compliant with the Order and must actively manage the pool’s operation in compliance with the Order.
  • Gatherings are still prohibited (i.e., the pool deck cannot be open for lingering/loitering of non-family members).
  • Minimum of 6-foot Social Distancing (100% requirement, in and out of the pool).
  • Face coverings are mandatory when not in the pool.
  • Locker rooms cannot be occupied.
  • Restrooms, if open, must have a rigorous cleaning and disinfection protocol.
  • Equipment in the pool area, including deck furniture, must be wiped down after each use.

Environmental Health Services will be resuming pool inspections but will leave if site conditions are unsafe for inspection staff. If this occurs, you may be charged a reinspection fee.

Don’t hesitate to contact Ngai Wong at nwong@smcgov.org if you have any additional questions.

Sincerely,

San Mateo County Pool Program
