Monday's Information for Mississippi Family Physicians
CENTERS FOR MEDICARE AND MEDICAID SERVICES
: CMS put out a
press release Saturday
announcing an expansion of the accelerated and advance payment program for Medicare-participating physicians. Including changes from the new Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act signed into law by President Trump, the program ensures that physicians can focus on patient care. Accelerated and advance Medicare payments will provide emergency funding and addresses cash flow issues based on historical payments. To qualify for accelerated or advance payments, the physician must: (a) have billed Medicare for claims within 180 days immediately prior to the date of signature on the request form, (b) not be in bankruptcy, (c) not be under active medical review or program integrity investigation, and (d) not have any outstanding delinquent Medicare overpayments.
Medicare will start accepting and processing these requests immediately and CMS anticipates that the payments will be issued within seven days of the provider's request.
Information about the process and directions on how to submit a request can be found here.
SMALL BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION:
The SBA's Paycheck Protection loan program has been allocated $350 billion through the CARES Act to help small businesses keep workers employed amid the health emergency.
It is "really more of a loan that converts to a grant,"
said Neil Bradley, EVP and chief policy officer at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Small businesses with fewer than 500 employees qualify, as will some larger companies. The program is aimed at helping businesses maintain their payroll during the significant business disruption caused by the coronavirus crisis. Here's how the loan forgiveness works:
- Your company's expenses for the eight-week period after the origination of the loan will be analyzed.
- Every dollar your company spent on payroll, utilities, rent, or interest on mortgage debt will be added together. That amount will be forgiven, up to the total amount your company borrowed through the program.
- There is one caveat, however. The amount that is forgiven will be reduced for businesses that lay off employees during the first eight weeks following the loan. Companies that reduce wages of employees who make less than $100,000 per year by 25 percent or more will also have the forgivable amount reduced.
AMERICAN ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS:
AAFP has put together a
Financial Relief page
containing tools and resources to help members understand these relief programs and prepare to apply for assistance. AAFP will host a Town Hall this Wednesday at 7 pm Central on
AAFP's Facebook page
and other social media outlets to discuss financial relief.
AAFP MEMBERSHIP AND CME:
AAFP's Board of Directors has met and approved extensions regarding membership and CME, including: (a) extending the 2020 membership dues payment deadline from May to July 14, 2020, (b) extending the 2019 CME reporting deadline from May to Dec. 31, 2020, and (c) extending the 2020 CME reporting deadline to Dec. 31, 2021.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
- LONG SLEEVE LAB COATS: We asked Dr. Michael Edmond, MD, MPH, MPA, MBA - author of this article on Kevinmd -- what he thought about white coats being worn during this time. Dr. Edmond is Clinical Professor of Infectious Diseases at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. His response: "We don't have data that bare-below-the-elbows reduces infections, but we have biologic plausibility. Numerous studies have shown that clothing becomes contaminated at work. Sleeve cuffs are particularly at risk since they touch the patient and the patient's environment and cannot be decontaminated between patients. Studies in simulation labs show that provider clothes inoculated with bacteria or viruses, followed by a physical exam performed on a mannequin, result in transfer of microorganism to the mannequin, and vice versa. Moreover, studies show that white coats are infrequently laundered. Putting all of that together, it is simply common sense to get rid of them, particularly now."
- FACE SHIELDS: The latest post on Dr. Edmond's blog, Controversies in Hospital Infection Prevention, gives physicians the lowdown on face shields and best practices surrounding them. He even posted a short Youtube video showing how to wear and clean a face shield.
Mississippi's Coronavirus Hotline is now being staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Call 1-877-978-6453. The CDC hotline specifically for health care workers is 770-488-7100
