Dear Accommodation Community,
Dr. Bonnie Henry announced new province-wide restrictions to limit the spread of Covid-19. The order is in effect from November 20, 2020 to December 7, 2020 at midnight; though it is possible that we may see these measures extended at that time.
The order includes, but is not limited to, the below restrictions:
- Travel:
- All residents in BC are encouraged to limit all non-essential travel.
- All residents from outside of BC have been asked to postpone their visits to the province at this time.
- Social Gatherings:
- No social gatherings of any size are permitted with anyone other than your household - if you live alone you are permitted to see your core bubble of one or two people.
- Events:
-
All events and community-based gatherings, as defined in the PHO order – Gatherings and Events (PDF), are suspended, this includes galas, theatre performances etc.
- Exceptions to Events:
- Funerals, weddings and baptisms:
- These may proceed with a limited number of people and a COVID-19 Safety Plan in place, with a maximum of 10 people attending, including the officiant. No public receptions allowed.
- Meetings:
-
Formal meetings (business meetings, support groups, city council meetings) can continue with up to 50 people, space permitting, and with appropriate COVID-19 safety measures in place.
- Masks:
- Masks are now required for everyone in all public indoor settings and workplaces. People who cannot wear a mask or who cannot put on or remove a mask on their own are exempt.
- Employers are expected to enforce the mandatory mask policy with both employees and customers
- A customer can be refused entry or service if they do not wear a mask.
- Masks are required in all workplaces for shared work areas and areas where physical distancing cannot be maintained.
- Workplaces:
- Employers must review their COVID-19 Safety Plan, ensuring that employees self-monitor for symptoms daily and stay home if symptomatic.
- Where possible, workers should be encouraged to work from home.
- Employers must ensure that all workers and customers maintain appropriate physical distance and wear masks when physical distancing is not possible.
- Inspections of businesses and enforcement of public health orders are being increased and business. Non-compliancy may result in orders and fines, or closures
- Restaurants and Bars
- Restaurants and bars can continue to operate as long as they have a COVID-19 Safety Plan and employee protocols in place.
- Only members of the same household should visit a restaurant together with a limit of six people at a table.
- Reservations for private parties that include more than one household or core bubble must be cancelled

Loss. It's something that has become synonymous with this pandemic.
Loss of business. Loss of revenue. Loss of employees.
We of course know that the road ahead will once again be challenging for our industry - but on a larger scale, the reality that this pandemic poses, at this critical stage for British Columbia, is severe.
Loss of life.
This second wave will be a challenging chapter for our province as we each do our part to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our community members. We need to stop the spread of this virus and we recognize that our accommodation community has routinely demonstrated compliance in doing so. We thank you for this.
Our industry will persevere and the BC Hotel Association will continue to work on your behalf. We know that these restrictions are particularly challenging to businesses in ski destinations that would typically be heading into peak season right now.
We continue to support the ski industry with our knowledge and capacity and partnership with go2HR to support Safety Plans, protocol training and to support a Safe and successful ski season. We also know the messaging with the public health orders can be confusing to the consumer. We are working with Government to ensure the meetings, which are allowed to continue, are well scripted to mitigate cancellations. We will continue to update and support on this as this develops.
Please stay well and understand that we are here for each of you during this next chapter.
Stay safe,
Ingrid Jarrett
