RESPONSIBILITY TO CURB VIRUS SPREAD SPREADS TO LOCAL BUSINESSES

Florida's tally of confirmed COVID-19 cases continues to climb despite policies aimed at restricting residents' ability to congregate. Local governments are now looking to businesses, often dependent on government licenses and permits to operate, to help mitigate the spread of the disease. Establishments in different regions of Florida are now charged with ensuring that their customers comply with social distancing and face covering requirements, or else risk civil or even criminal penalties. Several business owners have vocally opposed such rules, citing fears of violent reactions from angry customers. Local governments across the state are left to weigh curbing public outbreaks against possible public outlashes.
