COVID-19 Update - May 11, 2020
|
|
Dear friends,
I hope that you had a good weekend, and a belated Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers in Don Valley West!
Yesterday, of course my mind was filled with treasured memories of my Mum. But my parents were a package deal, so on these special days they both fill my heart. My Mum managed everything in our family's "world" with intelligence, grace and strength. I miss her always.
Remembering our Brave Military Personnel
On Wednesday, Canadians gathered virtually to honour the six members of the
Canadian Forces
who were lost in a helicopter crash during
Operation REASSURANCE
. We keep their families in our thoughts and thank them for their service to our country. If you missed the repatriation ceremony, you can watch it
here
.
Last week also marked the
75th anniversary
of the end of the
Second World War
in Europe, also known as
V-E Day
.
Veterans Affairs Canada
is collecting virtual postcards that will be shared with Veterans who were part of the
Liberation of the Netherlands
. If you are interested, you can send a postcard
here
.
Flattening the Curve
I am thankful to our community for continuing to follow public health guidelines and maintaining physical distancing and practising good hygiene. We are flattening the curve and fighting COVID-19 together. Our government has
announced
an investment of
$175 million
to support the Canadian company,
AbCellera Biologics
and their very promising
research in drugs to treat COVID-19
.
I know that people are anxious to gather with family and friends, go back to school, enjoy Spring and Summer by travelling and being outdoors, and return to work. However, re-opening our economy requires a careful and coordinated approach informed by science and the advice of our public health officials to ensure that we keep the curve flattened. The federal government has worked closely with the provinces and territories on an
agreed common set of principles for restarting the economy
.
Helping our Neighbours
While we don't know when this crisis will end, I am always inspired by acts of kindness in our community. Scroll down to read some stories and see how you can get involved. If you would like to share your own story or that of a neighbour, please send me an email at
rob.oliphant@parl.gc.ca

Last week, I dropped by the
Leaside Retirement Residence
to join a community group, called
#SmilesAreEssential
, to cheer on staff and residents. Don't worry; we kept our distance and used appropriate PPE! I also had a great conversation with students and their parents at Davisville's
Toronto Prep School
about how various levels of government can work together to support Canadians get through this difficult time and how we can rebuild after this pandemic is over.
The federal government continues to provide many support measures to help individuals, families, students, seniors, and businesses navigate the challenges caused by COVID-19. As the situation evolves, so does our government's response. While all the latest information is available at
canada.ca/coronavirus
, I will provide an update below on my work as the
Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs
, new measures announced to support
low-income essential workers
, information about an extension of the
Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy
, and various other programs to support Canadians.
Keeping Communities Safe
To protect Canadians and to avoid tragedies like the one in Nova Scotia recently, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau
announced
the
ban of over 1,500 models and variants of assault-style firearms
. The newly prohibited firearms and components cannot be legally used, sold, or imported in Canada. These firearms, designed for military use, have no place in our communities.
Keeping in Touch
Over the coming days, I will be hosting a number of
virtual events
to answer your questions and provide you with updates. Keep reading for details and mark your calendars!
If you ever have any questions or need support understanding measures taken by the federal government, please do not hesitate to contact my office at
416-467-7275
or
rob.oliphant@parl.gc.ca.
We are not there in person but check messages regularly as both my staff and I are working from our homes.

Public Service Announcement by the Ontario Energy Board
|
|
Beware of scams during the COVID-19 emergency!
The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) is aware of increasing efforts by scam artists attempting to take advantage of consumer uncertainty during this COVID-19 emergency. The OEB has taken steps to ensure that the power to your home or low-volume small business
cannot be disconnected
for non-payment by your utility until July 31, 2020. If you receive a message, text or phone call from someone posing as a utility representative and threatening to disconnect your power, do not respond to it -
contact your utility directly
using the telephone number displayed on your bill.
Consumer Tips:
- Beware of messages with COVID-19 in the subject line and claiming to be from your utility. There have been several reports of emails, texts and websites sharing fake information about bill relief programs, refunds and alternative payment methods during the COVID-19 emergency.
- Protect your personal information – Do not feel compelled to share your personal information. Your utility bill is private. It contains personal information like your account number and energy usage.
- Remain vigilant and continue to use safe web browsing and email practices. Make sure you are accessing a safe and trusted source such as the utility’s website or call centre telephone number exactly as displayed on your bill.
Consumers with questions or concerns about any suspicious communications claiming to be from their utility are also encouraged to contact the OEB.
- Call (Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.): 1-877-632-2727 (toll-free within Ontario) or 416-314-2455 (within Greater Toronto Area)
- Text: 1-844-621-9977 (toll-free within Ontario) or 416-544-5190 (within Greater Toronto Area)
- Email: consumerrelations@oeb.ca

Making PPE in Don Valley West
|
|
Everyone is stepping up to do their part to fight COVID-19. This week, I'm inspired by
Charlie
, a student at
Northlea Elementary and Middle School
. Charlie has always wanted a 3D printer. Recognizing the need for PPE for healthcare workers at this time, he raised funds to buy a
3D printer
and is making
face shields
and
face mask buckles
that are already being used by doctors at St. Joseph's Hospital. Hear the full story from Charlie himself by clicking on the image below:
