FDA Authorizes Emergency Use of
Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine
For 12-15 Year Olds

Today the U.S. Food and Drug Administration expanded emergency use authorization (EUA) for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to include adolescents 12 through 15 years of age. The FDA determined the vaccine has met the statutory criteria and that the known and potential benefits of this vaccine in individuals 12 years of age and older outweigh the known and potential risks, supporting the vaccine's use in this population.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) will meet on Wednesday, May 12th to review and vote on the vaccine recommendation. For those interested, ACIP meetings are open to the public and available online via live webcast.

The FDA has updated the Fact Sheets for Health Care Providers Administering the Vaccine and for Recipients and Caregivers with information to reflect the use of the vaccine in the adolescent population. Read the FDA News Release.
