I n an effort to keep Delaware's medical community current on the latest information regarding the coronavirus crisis, the Medical Society of Delaware is sharing the following:
Governor Carney Announces Reopening of Delaware Beaches / Community Pools

Governor John Carney has announced the State of Delaware will lift restrictions on Delaware beaches at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22nd, subject to strict social distancing requirements and other restrictions. Delaware’s mandatory 14-day quarantine for out-of-state travelers and ban on short term rentals will remain in effect.

Beach goers must maintain at least six feet of distance between themselves and anyone outside their household. Face coverings must be worn on the boardwalk and are encouraged on the beach.  Read more.

The State of Delaware will lift restrictions on community pools starting at 5:00 p.m., Friday, May 22nd, subject to strict social distancing requirements and other restrictions. Pools will be limited to 20% of regular capacity. Swim lessons or practices of swim teams are not permitted at this time.  Read more.
DPH Announces 271 New Positive Cases / Thirteen Additional Deaths

According to the Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH)  271 new Delawareans have been diagnosed with COVID-19, taking the total number of lab-confirmed cases to  7,223, including  273 who are hospitalized,  52 of whom are critically ill.

Two hundred sixty individuals have died due to COVID-19 in Delaware with ages ranging from 21 to 103 years old.

The most recent deaths ranged in age from 21 to 94. Six were New Castle County residents, one was a Kent County resident, and six were Sussex County residents. Nine of the individuals had underlying health conditions and nine of the individuals were residents of long-term care facilities.

Latest statistics on positive cases:

  • New Castle County cases: 2,560
  • Kent County cases: 1,115
  • Sussex County cases: 3,503
  • Unknown County: 45
  • Age range: 0 to 103

MSD Member Shares Dire Challenges Facing Private Practice Physicians

MSD member and primary care physician James M. Gill, MD was featured in a recent Washington Post article which shed a bright light on the dire challenges facing many private practices as a result of COVID-19. Like many physicians around Delaware and the country, Dr. Gill struggled to get a Paycheck Protection Program loan with all the red tape and confusion. Read article.
Roadmap for Resuming Elective Surgery

Several national associations and societies have published a joint statement, Roadmap for Resuming Elective Surgery after COVID-19 Pandemic. Physician and facility readiness to resume elective surgery will vary by geographic location. The joint statement provides a list of principles and considerations to guide physicians, nurses, and local facilities in their resumption of care for operating rooms and all procedural areas.
