  • The Ontario government announced that the Declaration of Emergency will be extended until July 15, 2020.
  • Ontario’s Premier announced that the City of Toronto and Peel Region moved into Stage 2 on Wednesday June 24, 2020. The Premier has also Premier announced that the region of Windsor-Essex, with the exception of Leamington and Kingsville, moved into Stage 2 effective June 25, 2020. Leamington and Kingsville are currently being held in stage 1 due to higher transmission rates in the local agriculture and agri-food sector.
  • The government of Ontario announced its safety plan for the resumption of classes for the 2020-21 school year. The government has asked each school board in Ontario to prepare their own safety plan for the upcoming school year and submit it to the government in early August. You can find more information on the government’s plan HERE.
  • As a reminder, the Ontario government has launched a website, the Workplace PPE Supplier Directory, to provide businesses with a list of Ontario companies and business associations that are ready to supply PPE to businesses.

COVID -19 Federal Government Updates

  • The Prime Minister indicated that the federal government intends to extend the Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance (CECRA) program by one month. He indicated that the government is working with the provinces and territories on this extension.
  • The Prime Minister announced the launch of the Canada Student Service Grant which will support post-secondary students and recent graduates as they volunteer to serve in their communities’ COVID-19 response. This program was originally announced by the federal government in April 2020.
  • Canada’s Minister of Finance, Bill Morneau, posted on social media that there would be a delay in launching the changes to the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) that were expected to take effect today. Earlier this week, the federal government announced that the applications will be accepted so that more small businesses can access the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA). The message on the CEBA site indicates that there will be “a slight delay in the roll out of the application process for the expanded program, in order to ensure that the program’s IT infrastructure is safe and secure for the businesses it serves.”
  • The Federal government announced that they are extending the time period for temporary layoffs to allow employers more time to recall laid-off employees. These changes temporarily extend the lay-off time periods by up to six months. For reference, on June 1st the Ontario government announced a temporary change to the Employment Standards Act (ESA) that put non-unionized employees covered under the ESA who have had their hours reduced or eliminated due to COVID-19 on Infectious Disease Emergency Leave. This change was implemented to ensure that businesses are not forced to terminate employees after their ESA temporary layoff periods have expired.
  • A reminder that the Prime Minister announced the launch of the Government of Canada’s PPE Supply Hub website to bring together available resources for organizations who are buying and selling PPE. Buyers will find PPE supplier lists, in addition to guidance to help plan their PPE purchases.
  • A reminder that the federal government has launched a Business Support Portal to help businesses find COVID-19 support they may qualify for.
