Impact on Nursing

Vaccines and Disparities
It is important to mitigate the disproportionate impacts of the virus has had on people of color and prevent widening racial health disparities during the COVID-19 vaccine rollout. The Kaiser Family Foundation explores the data surrounding COVID-19 vaccinations and race/ethnicity.

The Hastings Center discusses the systemic racism in health policy and the vaccine rollout in the essay Vaccine Hesitancy Is No Excuse for Systemic Racism.

The Urban Indian Health Institute published a report card grading U.S. states on quality of COVID-19 racial data, including their effectiveness in collecting and reporting data on American Indian and Alaska Native populations.
Vaccine Updates and Rollout
The FDA issued emergency use authorization for the third COVID-19 vaccine. The Biden Administration announced that they will utilize the Defense Production Act to ramp up production and that Merck will assist with producing the vaccine.

Health care systems across the United States continue to struggle rolling out the COVID-19 vaccine. The New York Times is tracking the vaccine rollout. View this interactive map to view your state's progress.

Technology and equity continue to serve as barriers to disseminating the COVID-19 vaccine. The Brookings Institute explores the challenges as we enter the “last mile” of the vaccine rollout in their article "Getting the COVID-19 vaccine: Progress, and equity questions for the next phase."

NPR reports a number of states are going against federal vaccination guidelines and drawing criticism from essential workers and people with underlying conditions.

COVID-19 Global Perspectives
ANAC joins the World Health Organization Vaccine Equity Declaration to call on countries and companies to ensure COVID-19 vaccines are being administered in every country, as a symbol of hope for overcoming both the pandemic and health inequalities. We invite you to sign the declaration.

COVID-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) is a global initiative aimed at equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines. Learn more about how COVAX will share the COVID-19 vaccines globally.

South Africa has been the hardest hit country on the continent and continues to combat the COVID-19 epidemic with the emergence of new variant. There are many things we can learn as South Africa fights the COVID-19 variants.

The AETC National Center presents a seven-session HIV & SARS-CoV-2 Winter Webinar Series designed to enhance the readiness of healthcare providers caring for people with HIV and COVID-19. This series is available on demand.
Self-care during the COVID-19 Pandemic
ANAC’s health and wellness committee has compiled resources and information and hosted an online Yoga Nidra class to help nurses and other health care professionals take time for self-care.

The Center to Advance Palliative Care has created a series of COVID-19 Emotional PPE Resources. These resources will assist with navigating moral distress, grief and trauma. 

COVID-19 has required collaboration among employers and workers to create holistic approaches to managing workplace fatigue. The CDC investigates COVID-19 and Workplace Fatigue: Lessons Learned and Mitigation Strategies.
