Dear Superintendents and School Leaders,

I'm writing to share updates on a number of COVID-19-related items.

Safe Reopening Plan Template
The County of San Diego public health order dictates that “Each school shall complete and post a document detailing the actions the school is taking to comply with the [California Department of Public Health] Industry Guidance measures after considering the [California Department of Education] Guidelines [for reopening].”

The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) has worked with public health to create a template school reopening plan that meets the requirement outlined in the order. Thank you to the superintendents who weighed in on an early draft; your feedback is reflected in the document to the extent feasible after discussions with public health.

We recommend districts and schools use this template, which is customized to consider school operations, however there is no requirement to do so.

If you have questions about the public health order, please contact County Education Sector Lead Katie Gordon at Katherine.Gordon@sdcounty.ca.gov or at 619-885-0528. If you have questions about the template, please contact SDCOE Duty Officer Bob Mueller at bmueller@sdcoe.net.

In-Person Graduations and Sports
The current public health order continues to prohibit in-person graduations, and county public health has advised they expect that to be the case throughout July.

Additionally, the question about sports activities on campus has come up. The current health order does not allow for sports activities on our campuses (unless they are "sports day camps," which fall under the COVID-19 Industry Guidance for Day Camps).

Updated Guidance on Face Coverings
SDCOE has revised our memo on facial coverings to address Gov. Gavin Newsom’s recent comments that the issue of facial coverings for students is still under consideration. View it here.

American Academy of Pediatrics Reopening Guidance
In case you missed it, on June 25, the American Academy of Pediatrics released school opening guidance.

Communications Plan for School Reopening
SDCOE’s Communications team has created a variety of letter templates in English and Spanish to support communicating with your school community as we move towards reopening. Another resource is the National Communication Plan for School Reopening, which includes recommended tactics to reach stakeholders with critical updates, along with a series of templates. View the plan.

Thank you for all you are doing to support our region’s children during these unprecedented times. As always, please don't hesitate to get in touch if I can be of assistance.
