Dear Superintendents and Charter School Leaders,

As you know, Gov. Newsom today clarified some of the state-level expectations around face coverings and physical distancing and when to reopen and close schools. Newsom’s order also requires counties on the state watch list – which includes San Diego County – to remain in distance learning until certain conditions are met.

The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) team will carefully review the new industry guidance and work with local public health to understand how they intend to implement the order. We will update the materials in our reopening plan to align with the new guidance.

I also want to make you aware of two updates from the California Department of Education (CDE).

Reopening Guidance Webinar
CDE’s Communications team has informed us that you will receive an invitation later today to a webinar happening at 1 p.m. Monday. During the webinar, officials from CDE and the California Department of Public Health will provide a detailed overview of the governor’s updated COVID-19 guidance for schools and answer questions as districts and educators navigate implementation.

Distance Learning Implementation Tools
With more and more districts resuming learning virtually, CDE in the coming days will issue updated resources, best practices, and strategies for strengthening distance learning so that educators have the resources and support they need to accelerate learning and better address gaps this fall. We will share additional details when they are available.

As always, we will be in touch to support you as you work to implement this new order. Thank you for all you are doing during these unprecedented times. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if I can be of assistance.
