COVID-19 Vaccine Updates
Following FDA authorizations, the CDC has now recommended a booster dose for eligible individuals who have received any one of the three FDA-authorized vaccines.

In addition, it looks like the FDA and CDC are on track to provide emergency use authorization of the Pfizer vaccine for children 5 to 11. In Fairfax County, this means that approximately 97,000 more children will be eligible for vaccination! VDH is preparing to have vaccine available in anticipation of approval sometime next week. The Fairfax County Health Department is coordinating with VDH, FCPS, and private providers as more information on the rollout is received.

Pfizer and Moderna: For individuals who received a COVID-19 vaccine made by Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna, the following groups are now eligible for a single booster shot at six months or more after completing their initial series:

Johnson & Johnson: For individuals who received the COVID-19 vaccine made by Johnson & Johnson, a single booster shot is recommended at two months or more after receiving the initial vaccination for all persons 18 years of age and up.

If you have not received your COVID-19 Vaccine or the booster, I strongly encourage you to do so. The Tysons Community Vaccination Center (7950 Tysons Corner Center) is open from 10AM to 7:30PM, Monday through Saturday. There are plenty of open appointments, and walk-ins are also welcome.
Halloween Guidance
The Virginia Department of Health recommends the following guidance:
  1. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 10 days, or have been in contact with someone with COVID in the past 14 days, stay home and away from others.
  2. If you are self-isolating or self-quarantining, do not participate in trick-or-treating this year, rather, consider virtual options to celebrate.
  3. Maintain at least six feet of distance between yourself and others who do not live in your household.
  4. Wash your hands before going trick-or-treating or handing out candy. Hand sanitizer should be used while trick-or-treating or handing out candy when soap and water aren’t available.
  5. Wear a cloth mask. Halloween masks may not fit snugly against the face and may not cover the nose and mouth. Halloween masks with gaps and holes do not protect against inhaling respiratory droplets from other people. Wearing a cloth mask under a Halloween mask may make it hard to breathe and is not recommended.
  6. If you hand out candy, consider setting up an area outside, like a folding table or chairs, to set out candy. Space out the placement of treats so that multiple people do not have to reach into the same bowl. Consider contactless ways to deliver treats, like a candy chute that is more than six feet long.
  7. For trunk-or-treating, create distance between cars by parking in every other space.

Adoption Awareness Month
November is Adoption Awareness Month, a time to celebrate adoptive parents for taking an extraordinary step in opening their hearts and homes to children in need of a safe place to call home! Did you know that there are children in foster care waiting for adoptive homes? So many of these children have special needs, are over the age of 9, or are part of sibling groups that would like to find a permanent home together. Adoptive parents support children as they recover from past traumatic experiences so that they can thrive. Explore the path to becoming a foster or adoptive parent or email BeAFosterParent@fairfaxcounty.gov.
